I just got my GI1911 back from springfield today after sending it in for warranty work. They did a great job and it works great now. No more FTF. They replaced the extractor, polished the feed ramp, and reamed the chamber. In and back in under 2 weeks I believe. A pleasant experience over all. To those who have wondered about Springfield's customer service. They did ok by me.

hooray for springfield

Mine would ftf at various times ,but almost always on the last round. It would get worse when hot. I tried 3 different brands of mags and all did the same thing. I tried just about everything i could think of before sending it back. I had heard quite a few negative comments about springfield's customer service. Either I got lucky or they have changed the way they do things.Escaped from California 8-28-2007. Now breathing the free air of Idaho.Comment

I had to send my loaded in, the slide froze to the frame the first day i took it out...my gunsmith said the fit wasnt right and there was an unbelievable amount of burrs, so I sent it back...
They fixed it I guess, but I ended up canning everypart on it besides the trigger and frame and made a bullseye gun...
I would buy another springfield but it would most likely be a mil-spec one for service pistol...Comment

Springfield's customer service is actually quite good. I have 3 1911's and returned one with barrel locking lug issues, they sent me a new pistol. They are a high volume manufacturer and quality control can be an issue, but from 2 yrs of 1911 forums, they appear to make a genuine effort to correct the problems. One hint, try to find a pistol with NM as the serial no. prefix, these are assembled in the U.S. and generally have a higher fit and finish.Comment

The customer service is great, but I know if I had gun with KImber I wouldnt need to send my brand new 1911 A-1 loaded model in. I had the same exact problem. I had to send it in and get a ramp and port job on it. Hey at least it was free, but you would figure with all these people complaining, they would at least fix the problem."Calguns, where we show our opponents our hand, tell them our next move and expect to win."Comment

What was the problem with your trp?Originally posted by jessegpresleyI had a bad experience with Springfield. They took over a month to get my TRP back to me. Nobody would return my calls or emails, and the promised return date was weeks off.LIVE FREE OR DIE!

Would you guys say that my issue with the last round not feeding properly is a springfield magazine issue? I intend on picking up a few chip mccormick mags regardless but I'd like to know what others have experienced just so I know that there's nothing wrong w/ my gun.Comment

My experience with Springfield wasn't pleasant. I'm happy others haven't had to go through it. All mass produced and even semi-custom guns can have problems and breakages. I've had more breakages on my "high-end" guns than I have on my Kimbers and Colt and SA combined.
I would guess you mean external extractors not ejectors. Kimber has gone back to all internal extractors now after 2 years and 4 designs of externals. They were problematic on the some of the shorter 1911's.Originally posted by tankermanUnless your Kimber has one of those goofy external ejectors, they break.
BTW, when an internal extractor breaks, chances are it was on the last round of a magazine and it's a mag problem.Last edited by Kruzr; 06-29-2006, 10:11 AM.Comment

What exactly is the problem? It gets a ride over and the slide closes with a round in the magazine? The slide locks back with a round in the magazine? It binds and the slide doesn't close all the way? The last round stove pipes? Be a bit more particular.Originally posted by asintadoWould you guys say that my issue with the last round not feeding properly is a springfield magazine issue? I would automatically assume that if you having problems with the last round only, it would probably be the magazine. It could be a couple things, but the first two that come to mind are feeds lips and spring tension. Don't mess with the fed lips unless you know what you are doing (I would also expect that if it is Springfield made, the lips should be fine for normal feeding). Your spring tension might be too weak. A cheap inexspensive fix is to take the mag spring out and stretch it slightly. Put it back in and see how it works. That will make the round rise faster (preveting more ride overs and some slide lock problems) and it will give more tension to prevent some forms of stove piping along with some other issues. Don't stretch it too much though or you create more problems.

The last round begins to feed into the chamber but when the slide begins to close its doesn't close completely, the round is about half exposed through the ejection port. I just pull back slightly and then it properly feeds. This does not occur everytime, I'd say every 4 or 5 magazines. Could it also be the gun just got dirty after shooting so many rounds?Comment

Is the round at an angle or perfectly in line with the barrel? If it's at an angle, it's a 3 point bind and can be caused by several things. If it's perfectly in line with the barrel it could be a couple things also, but they are easier to check. It sounds like, at least to me, a badly tuned extractor. Did you have an extractor replaced, tuned, installed, etc any time recently?Originally posted by asintadoThe last round begins to feed into the chamber but when the slide begins to close its doesn't close completely, the round is about half exposed through the ejection port. No, no recent extractor work. I just recieved the gun and tried it out the other day. When I first began shooting, everything was going smooth. It was only when it became very dirty that the problem emerged (about 200 or so rounds into shooting). I also thought it could be the magazine because the oem springfield ones felt kind of "wobbly" when inserted in the pistol.Comment
