I was just going from my opinion what I would do from that one picture.
I agree with you, if there is rust you have to control that any way you like.

I just wasn't sure of your age, so I wanted you to be aware of the good history behind adding Smith and Wesson sights to a 1911.

anyway you look at it ...
it's a great shooter and that's the most important thing.

you can make it look however you like.

as long as we get more pictures
(maybe a before and after series.)

Norrell's Molly Resin is a supplier to many Manufacturers
So Molly resin or ceracote

Alumnahyde 2 is not bad but nowhere as durable as the ones above

Sealocan was just making friendly conversation, I now have a couple of folks that want to buy as is? I did disassemble it and sprayed everything down with brake cleaner so I can see just what it looks like inside. Not as bad as I thought. I'd guess I've owned this for 36+ years I was still on active duty when I bought it, used to shoot the heck out of it but even though I know better its been in the safe in a vinyl gun rug zipped tight I usually have these stored better. May be time for one of the pistol racks for the safe.

Well just got my quote back $180 and three weeks.
I think I'll just take the advice above and give it a good cleaning and put it back together and shoot it again.

I can see the rust you're dealing with now, better from the second photo.

$180 doesn't sound too bad but I would hate to be without my gun for 3 weeks.

I wonder if that product
" Kroil " would work. I've never use It but I've heard good things about it helping with rust removal.

I have a Wonder Blue kit, I'm going to use it I've had good luck in the past using it. Not going to blue or touch up just rust removal.
Have a can of Kroil on hand also.
During assembly Frog Lube.
