DIY refinish

Whats best for the home DIY guy. Cerakote, Duracoat? Any others to check out?

Im looking into doing my ar with alumahyde II from brownells. Seems to turn out pretty well

I suggest starting with home parkerizing first.

I may just run this to a local shop and have it cerakoted. Just need to figure out what parts to do, I guess everything that is external.

Its a WW II Ithaca that someone (not I) added S&W revolver sights, and tried their hand at engraving, it looks to me that it was stored in a leather holster or a rug that caused the pitting you see. Its a great shooter has a Colt MKIV series 70 barrel and bushing.
I think I'll do it in flat black, unless I see something else that catching my eye.

Bead blast it then parkerize it and then paint or coat it.

I'd end up spending as much money as I think the gun might be worth, I doubt it would increase the value by two.
It's disassembled going to run it up to the Cerakote place to check colors and prices.

I believe you're going to do have to do some surface preparation or else it will show through the paint cover up.


Maybe it was probably before your time but putting Smith and Wesson adjustable sights on a 1911 was all the rage in the shooting circles way back when.

it was considered a great upgrade.


it was mine I would leave it the way it is, just oil it up and buy ammo with my extra money and go shooting it.

Back in the old days adding S&W sights on a 1911 was a common thing in the custom crowd, if you wanted adjustable sights.
I don't think theres many gunsmiths who would do it or even know how to do it. Although there isn't a need to do it anymore.

+ 1 on not refinishing it. That old pistol tells a lot of stories looking that way.

No not before my time (73) I do remember that, I don't think I'd do a lot to remove engraving etc I was thinking it would remove the little rust that's here and there and give it a different look.
As for a shooter I can mix and match different bullet types in a magazine and this thing just plain shots anything fed it, I'd almost bet if I had full wadcutters they would feed, can't recall a FTF or FTE ever.
I understand the keep it as is but still thinking since its no longer as original WW !! Ithaca why worry about it.
