ok a couple more noob questions... in one of my magazines (10 rounder) I can squeeze in 11... is this a sign that it's wearing out?

and when there is no cartridge or magazine in the gun, why doesn't the slide lock back?

That is very strange. Are you sure you are loading 40 cal into the mag. I have a feeling you accidentally slipped some 9mm in when you were loading. Try it again and ensure you are using 40 cal[/quote]

Huh? With no magazine in the gun, the slide only locks back if you manually actuate the slide stop. With an empty magazine in the gun, it should lock back automatically.

all I have is 40 cal... so unless some 9MM was packaged as 40

and it does lock back automatically with the mag in. so I would just have to manually push the slide lock to lock slide when there is nothing in the gun.

Is it a factory magazine? Usually it is a struggle to even get rounds 8 and 9 into a factory magazine let alone round 10. The fact that you got round 11 into the mag is troubling. That magazine has the capacity to accept more than 10 rounds. Again, is it a factory magazine?

That is how it is supposed to work.

yep, it's a glock factory magazine. I have 4... the other ones all stopped at 10, but this one was able to squeeze 11. they all have the 10 round window.

If you field strip your pistol take your frame and stick a magazine into the magwell. You'll see that the follower pushes up on the slide stop. This is why the slide will lock back with a mag in the gun. Without a magazine in the gun, there's nothing to push up the slidestop to slidelock. Therefore you'll have to manually push up the slidestop to lock the slide to the rear.

Perhaps the previous owner "modified" the magazine in question. If that's the case, you probably want to replace worn/defective/modified parts with OEM mag parts til it holds only the legally mandated 10 rounds maximum again.

i wonder if the follower slipped past the QC at the factory?

Take one of the normal mags apart along with the one that accepts 11 rounds and compare their internals and replace what ever looks off spec.

Personally, I wouldn't trust the odd mag for anything more than range duty.

If you didn't modify the magazine to accept more than 10 rounds, I wouldn't worry about "correcting" the problem. Just leave it as is. There is no restriction against possession of high capacity magazines.

After squeezing the 11th round into your mag, can that round be compressed enough to function in your pistol? If it's a tight enough fit, it might not allow you to seat the magazine properly.

Also, overloading a magazine isn't such a bright idea if you're concerned about wearing them out prematurely.
