    New guy questions...

hey guys, I have a couple questions regarding my glock 23.

-is it bad to dry fire the gun?
-does it cause damage to drop the slide release (as in not guide it back?) (both loaded or not)

-mine currently only has a front night sight... anyone know why someone would set it up this way? is it best to add rear night sights?

and I've done some searching on the top two questions, just wanted some responses on the specific gun.

    Thanks

Shouldn't be a problem to dry fire with most modern guns.

Don't make it a habit to drop the slide on an empty chamber. Don't stick a round into the chamber manually and drop the slide as you'll damage the extractor.

Some people prefer only having the front sight a night sight because they only focus on the front sight.

i heard it's not good to dry fire striker fired firearms...true? i've heard so with the MP45...so i use SnapCaps.

I try not to use the slide release, cuz it will wear out...i jus usually use the sling shot method...pull back on the slide and let it go foward itself

You need to dry fire the Glock in order to dissassembly it.

Dry fire your Glock ALL YOU WANT. It is even part of the disassembly process to dry fire it.

NEVER ride the slide (guide it closed) when you are chambering a round. The gun is designed to slam closed when there is a loaded magazine in the pistol. If you guide it closed, your gun might not go into battery depending on the type/condition/cleanliness of the gun.

Letting the slide slam closed on an empty chamber is not a great habit. Definitely don't do it with a 1911, but I don't care about doing it on most other guns.

Thanks for the replies guys.... one other question.

-is it bad to store your magazines loaded? would it cause the mag to wear out quicker?

Mags wear out under use. So no.

Nope, I've left a couple magazines loaded for 3+ years now and they're fine. The magazine springs are only worn when in constant use.

Any other questions? I'm here all day.

                  Thanks guys!!

from videos I've seen, it looks like you can also use a G22 mag on the G23... do they make anything that fills in the gap of the longer mag?

here's the only pic I have of mine

+1 on dry firing and slide release. It's also fine to store Glock mags loaded.
Not sure about "filling the gap" with G22 mags, but why not just use G23 mags? Congrats on a great pistol choice.

+1 One of the things many people tend to do when shooting a pistol is focus too much on the real sight.

Just take the mags apart every few months and stretch the springs out if you're worried, you should clean the internals periodically anyways.

Do a search for "jet funnel", I know they make them for H&Ks but not so sure about Glock.
