    Smith and Wesson M&P

    Hey Everyone,

I'm looking at purchasing my first handgun. I'm still a bit confused on the current law for Smith and Wesson M&P's, I know they are banned, but what if I were to buy one on this site and then have the transaction done with my local gun store? Are all M&P's not an option anymore in CA?

    Thanks,

You can do a private party transfer with someone selling one on this site. That's exempt from roster. No new M&P purchases from ffl though. (Unless you are LE)

S&W M&P are not banned, just not on the roster and that means you cannot buy it from a dealer's inventory. You can acquire one through Private Party Transfer (PPT) from another CA resident at a FFL or a local gun store. So yes, you can buy one in the Calguns Marketplace and arrange with the seller to have the transaction done in a local gun store.

The only M&P in the roster are the CA compliant M&P Shield.

I saw that Triple A's in Vallejo had an MP 40 about a week ago.

The SW m&P Shield is still on. The roster. They have them at Bass Pro in Manteca.

Pointless unless buyer is LE. M&P have fallen off of the roaster, except for one model...

Only the CA Shield is on the roster. All others can no longer be sold new from out of state (no more SSE, until another loophole comes into effect) or by CA FFL, unless to an LE or exempt person.

All M&Ps currently in the state and in private hands (but not on the roster) are legal for sale via private party transfers. If they are here, they should already be in the system/registered.

Be aware that the M&P 9 is known to have inaccurate barrels. They're alright out to about 15 yards but suffer past that. I'm talking 8" groups at 25 yards off a rest. Just make sure it was made in 2013 or later if you get a 9mm.

Only the older production. Doesn't apply to all. S&W revised the barrel and changed twist rate. Even if OP gets one with inaccurate barrel, easily corrected with aftermarket barrels.

Check the barrels for dots that will determine the twist rate of the barrel

Be careful with this option. Most people on here are gouging for their M&P9s and HK VP9s. I just saw someone earlier today asking $800 for a standard M&P 9

Those were the much earlier ones.

My M&P9 FS is at least 4 years and I just checked it for zero, with a new load, over the weekend and it printed a group about 2" at 25 yards...shooting off a towel on an ammo box
