I don't know of a single FFL that would do this. The responsibility of paying for the purchase falls squarely on the buyer, not the FFL.

To reiterate a very solid point made above, if there is anything regarding a PPT that smells of wrongdoing, walk away.

I've called the local Sheriffs non emergency number and asked them to run a serial number on a gun I was interested in buying. I told them I wanted to be sure it was clear. This was before you had to buy through an FFL. They ran it and didn't act like it was out of the norm.

If I think my neighbor is making meth, the cop can't investigate if they are not already investigating? what about if a cop is at the swap meet and sees a piece of electronics with the serial number scratched off...wouldn't he check it out? I would think suspicion of selling stolen firearms would be something they would look into. Just say'n...admittedly, I don't really know. If that's true, no wonder we never get our stolen property back.
Your actually confusing the question, with issues that are unrelated to the original OP. He was essentially asking if some LEO would help him out by running the serial number. In that instance it is a violation of policy as well as DOJ's regulations. There are a few people who have lost job's, or been suspended for running celebrities through the system, old girlfriends/boyfriends. Basically if you don't have a need it can't be done. Someone walking in and say I'm buying this gun and want to check if it is stolen is not a need, it's a favor. Especially since there is a system in place that checks this during the transaction.

I would ask, for the age, manufacturer, and model of firearm you are buying it is typical for there to be a case, manual and extra magazines. To illustrate, I did buy an older Kahr K9 which obviously spent most of its life in a safe or bottom of a dresser drawer, but no case or manual which is typical of older Kahrs. Just a thought.

PS I did have to provide my own case so that the FFL could properly inventory the gun during the 10 day wait period.

Departmental policy. Don't believe me that's fine. Go to the LE section and ask if there are departmental policies regarding access of DOJ systems as a favor.

True. When you log into the system it actually has a warning on the initial screen that basically says 'use of the system is logged and any unauthorized inquiries may lead to dismissal etc". It's something to that effect.

I use to always check at the police department if a car, motorcycle, bicycle, stereo, etc was stolen. They never gave me any problems. They would also say "Just because it hasn't been reported doesn't mean it isn't stolen." If someone goes on vacation, and their stuff gets stolen, they can't report it until they get back.

By your reasoning, you're saying it is valid to report to the police that you suspect a crime is being committed because a Californian owns a firearm and is offering it to you for sale via a PPT at an FFL?
