    Beretta 92FS/M9, Why the hate?

Most people online, friends and shooters at the range have one thing in common: they all claim to dislike the Beretta 92FS/M9 pistol.

My M9 is my favorite pistol that I own, mainly because it's comfortable in my hands, I like the sighting system and I'm fairly accurate with it. When I ask others why they dislike the pistol, most of the time I don't get a straight answer; more along the lines of, "My brother in law enforcement said he saw the frame crack on one during his tour in Afghanistan." or, "I've read they're unreliable, but I haven't shot one."

    What's your opinion?

as a 9mm handgun, the Beretta is a fine combat pistol that is heavier than it needs to be; YMMV.

Can you link some of that hatred? I'm not aware of it.

I'm not really aware of it either.

I was in the Navy when we transitioned from the 1911 to the M9. I remember that I loved the fit in my hand, after the GI sights on the 1911 the M9 sights were the schizzle and I really liked the DA/SA. About the only thing I didn't like was the caliber. So much so that my first handgun was a DA/SA in .45ACP.

Naturally I DID wind up owning a 1911 or two.

I will qualify this statement by saying i don't own one but, i was interested in the Wilson Combat version when announced. Considered it as my last SSE. Started researching and found similar info as OP stated. The kicker was when i asked about them at On Target. The guy said it's the one pistol they can't keep on the rental board. Something is always wrong with it.

I thought everyone loved it. The only complaint I ever hear is the slide mounted safety. Also in California it may not be as popular because it is a huge gun and the 10 round capacity may make it not as popular because the grip is so big.

I think most of the hate is directed toward the safety / decocker.

Under stress, power stroking the slide, it is possible to accidentally decock and put an M9 into safe. We tend to lose the fine motor skills so a lot of people just take the entire hand to the slide, instead of carefully place the fingers where they don't hit the safety.

I personally don't encounter this much and have only made this error once in the <1,000 rounds I've toyed with my M9A1.

I recently picked up a Beretta 92G-SD with the decocking only action. So even if I do make the error, it will only decock and I just have a longer trigger pull. Very fine handgun and will probably come to be my favorite.

Fat and short grip, open slide, and slide mounted safety/decocker, and no rail on most models.

I think most people with smaller hands don't like the 92/M9 series. Beretta has finally addressed this in the A3 but who knows if they'll ever release it to the public.

For me, I like my M9 - it shoots great, eats all ammo. Hopefully, they'll release the A3 in Kaliforniastan.

I used to hate the Beretta, because when I was in the Army the pistol that was issued to me was garbage. I couldn't hit anything and thought it was somewhat cumbersome. Later on, I bought a 92f for 250 and took it to the range and I fell in love with it

In retrospect the pistol that was issued to me probably couldn't shoot strait because the barrel was probably all shot out. It never jammed on me, it just couldn't shot strait. Probably because of all the countless hours many soldiers before me, had spent cleaning that pistol.

My 92 is very accurate and is the pistol I use to introduce people to shooting for the first time. The weight makes it more manageable in both recoil and give new shooters a more secure feeling.

I also have m9a1 that my brother gave me as a wedding gift so now I can dual wield. In reality I prefer the one with no rail and is usually in my bag when I go shooting. My only complaint is that the slide release is not mig enough for people with small hands. My wife can not reach the slide release while holding the pistol with one hand. She always has to manipulate the slide to get it to chamber. That is a non issue for most males.

I have an M9A1 and love it. Yes, the grips a bit on the large size, there a lot of takeup in the trigger. DA is pretty stiff. The slide mounted safety/decocker sometimes gets in my way. And of course, in this state, 10 round limits.

However, in my puny hands, it's very accurate with decent ammo. Mags of any capacity are plentiful. It's low recoil. and looks just so dang sexy.

Slingshot is a bit difficult with the decocker. For me at least. I'm used to a slide with no features. The gun is thicker than average. But the open top makes it super reliable.

Stock trigger is pretty bad. Grip is pretty big with the stock grips.
