In my bedroom, I litterally have no furniture besides a bed. I have a "sleigh" style bed, so there is room behind the bed, but the headboard connected to the bed frame itself is curved so I'm not sure if a flat box object will mount to it. Mounting directly on the wall may be awkward if I understand how the GunVault models function. Ideally, something under the bed would be best.

I agree with the biometric. I'd rather something be mechanical than electric for this purpose.

I'm not up on the current CA law. Can I store the pistol in a locked container in the house with a loaded magazine, but not chambered?

      From BOF website http://ag.ca.gov/firearms/pubfaqs.php#4
Am I required by law to store my firearms where children cannot access them?

Yes. In most cases, if you keep any loaded firearm within any premise which is under your custody or control and know or reasonably should know that a child (person under 18 years of age) is likely to gain access to the firearm, you may be guilty of a felony if a child gains access to that firearm and thereby causes death or injury to any person unless the firearm was in a secure locked container or locked with a locking device that rendered it inoperable.

      (PC Section 12035-12036)

So as long as Johnny does not get his hands on it you can store it loaded or not.

As a side question, has anyone ever been busted for a kid breaking a container and taking the gun anyway?

I use a biometrics one for the emergency guns. It takes less that 2 sec to open, and you don't have to worry about remembering the combination, finding the keys, etc. I haven't had a single problem with opening it. I probably opened it over 1000 times by now.

It also has a keypad and a key You don't HAVE to use the biometric reader, so it is still trustworthy in a life or death scenario

How secure are those GunVaults against tampering? Specifically I'm asking about the scenario where someone breaks into your house when you are not there and wants to steal your gun (or whatever is in the safe). They look to me like someone with a crowbar could pry open that and steal whatever is inside.

It's not difficult for a thief to break into. They weren't meant to be safes or vaults even though the name sort of implies it...

The best security for your valuables is when a thief doesn't know you have them. That is why I like in-wall safes.

I also like electronic keypads for large safes, but a mechanical lock for something you rely on in a hurry.

Being an owner of this safe, I called the company to inquire about the cause of this problem. The person I spoke to at GunVault explained that the affected units were manufactured in April 2008 not all April 2008 units were affected. It has to do with a part that was not correct. The result was a locking mechanism that would not lock due to interference. Tapping on the unit caused the door to open because it was not locked to begin with. The problem was identified and corrected.

If you own one of these GunVault Gun Safes look under the foam padding within the box. Look for the Manufacture date of the unit you have. If it is April 2008, call the company and get it replaced. If you are considering ordering one of these, I'd suggest asking the company you buy it from to verify that the manufacture date is NOT April 2008 before you buy it.

I have one of these. I saw this video tried this on my own. Could not get it to open. Now my knuckles hurt.
Take it for what it's worth. If someone wants to get into your safe, given enough time and the right tools (not your knuckles) - they WILL.

It's unfortunate that Quality Control failed on that run of GunVaults but if I want a quick access safe, I'm still sticking to mine.
I'm not having a glass of wine, I'm having SIX. It's called a tasting and it's classy.

How many pistols can you fit inside the standard size gun vault?

What's the average price for one?

LOL, I just had to try that on my GunVault hoping the door wouldn't pop open. It didn't...

I have the multi. At one time I could fit a 92fs and Sigpro on the bottom with the ammo on top. So depending on size of the gun, 1-2 on the minivault and 2-4 on the multivault.

I have several of these around the house:

They're very compact and fit almost everywhere.
