    colt vs Springfield 1911

I'm finally taking the step to get my first 1911. My range is $800-$900. I saw a Springfield Loaded and a Colt Commander for the same price and i cant decide which one to get. I have done some research and i guess Springfield has their 1911's made in Brazil and US. Does this have any affect on quality? I want one thats on CA roster, novak sights, w/o the ambi safety, and a rail. Any other suggestions?

I've heard the same thing about the Springfields being all assembled in the US now. Don't know how true it is but all the ones I saw at the store had the US serial number (NM) and had the Geneseo IL rollmark; not the Brazil rollmark. The one I ordered from Ammo Paradise is an NM. I took a chance because it was so much cheaper than buying it at the LGS.

That being said my reading led to the info that all the forging is done in Brazil regardless, by IMBEL. No matter if it's a GI or Pro that's where they start. What changes is the assembly and fitting are done in the US. From what I've come to understand that's been the case since day one. IMBEL is a well known and well respected company with a reputation for quality, but that Brazil origin still bothers some people.

Personally I love my Springfield Loaded 1911. Shot great out of the box, everything is finished and fitted very nicely, and it came with the features I wanted for a lot less money. It's not failed me at the range and has fed every type of ammo I've tried.

For $950 you can pick up a Sig 1911R. I just took mine to the range for the first time today and love it. Only had Tula to feed it but there were no hiccups, obviously time will tell for sure.. Its on the CA list, Novak night sights, rail, and non ambi safety. Its got an alloy frame so its lighter than the Springfield's, and IMO a better trigger (at least of the ones I've handled). Not the most "traditional" 1911 available by any means but I think it is a solid addition to the market.

Springfield but can't go wrong with either. Plus Springfield's custom shop is superb if you decide to have any custom work done to the gun later down the road.

Definitely SA! Info regarding where they are manufactured can be found here.

Have a Colt government series 80 and love it. That being said, I think Springfields are excellent and probably get a few more features for slightly less money. If I was to buy a second 1911 it would be either a Springfield or RIA.

I have both Colt and Springfield 1911's. I have never had to send either to customer service. Both are that good.

If you plan to modify it in the near future (which is likely) then I would get the Springfield. If I was going to keep it bone stock then I would get a Colt.

Having said that if I was getting a 1911 for target, competition, & etc I would go for the Springfield.
