    I don't think its actually had a negative impact in any way, none that I've realized over the years... may be a non issue, but it is possible.

        I've heard this too, but my app recommends I plug in headphones so it uses that speaker instead.

          I tend to leave my smartphone in the car when I'm at the range.

          Even using an external microphone and speakers you are still exposing the phone's built-in speaker and microphone to very high sound pressure levels, you just aren't using them to translate sound waves into electrical signals. Any wear and tear would be on the tiny diaphragms used in the speakers and microphones, not in the electronics.

          I don't know if 140db is enough to damage the tiny transducers used in phones but my phone cost me too much to put at unnecessary risk.
