So the shell extracts... and you rack the pistol a couple times to "make sure all was clear".... what exactly did you think the racking cleared???

And this happened twice before the kaboom?

Sorry sounds like you had all the indications needed and chances to know better then pull the trigger a 3rd time.

If you have a small pop and a failure to extract... time to disassemble and check the barrel not rack 3 times and shoot away.

From the photos it looks like the rifling is jacked (or leaded?).. probably from the 3rd round expelling the 2 other rounds... unless they are still in there. And the reason you probably can't take the slide off besides the frame rails being jacked up is that the barrel is bulged.

IMO its your fault. And I doubt they will work with you as theres no proof that it was their ammo since apparently you purchased it on a separate date.

A strange pop is a squib. Hopefully the range that sold you the reloads helps you out so the lesson isn't so expensive. If you ever fire a round and it doesn't sound right like that, make sure you inspect the barrel to make sure there isn't a bullet stuck in the barrel.

Hate to say it, but it's on you. The range can't control what you feed your gun, or how you run it. sounds like you had a .45 caliber traffic jam in your barrel, with a full power round striking a squib round stuck in the barrel. Gotta pay attention when something doesn't feel right.

On the other hand, nice to see the durability of the Springfield and that it protected you from injury. You can ask the range, but I doubt they'll take any responsibility. Do they also have an FFL? If so, inquire where they get their reloads.

    What range were you at?

Will be curious to see what the outside of the chamber and barrel and down the bore looks like when/if you get it disassembled.

Glad you are OK - sucks that happened.

Mother of god, that XD 45 is done.

I would also agree with Bill Steele. I would see if the range would cover half of the cost.

Did you hear a loud bang after the first two FTE's? If so then probably not a squib, if not then probably a squib. Double charged load?

As Milsurpguy2000 points out, you likely had a squib load (can be a partial load) where the bullet gets lodged. You get an empty case on ejection. The reason the case didn't eject on its own is you didn't have enough energy to cycle the gun, same reason the bullet got lodged.

The above describes a user error. When you suspect a squib, you need to inspect the bore to assure the bullet left the barrel.

If I were you, I would approach the range, explain what happened (if the above is indeed what happened). I would suggest them splitting the cost of repair/replacement of the gun with you. Ultimately you were at fault because you didn't inspect the barrel for obstructions, BUT it would not have happened without the ammo being defective.
