Would you make this trade?

My friend saw that I had a HK USP 9mm and said he would trade me his Ruger SR22 with 5000 rounds of various 22lr (stingers, AE, Remington, etc) for the gun. I don't shoot the USP as much anymore, but it's still a deadly accurate gun, reliable, and of course it's an HK.

I have about 4000 rounds down the pipe for my gun and he has roughly 300 rounds down the pipe according to him.

What say calguns?

Okay so how much cash should I ask from his side? I was thinking another $100-$200

No way jose. Thats a step down. Who cares about the 5000 rounds. What happens after you shoot those? You'll be stuck paying a pretty penny for .22lr

Considering the current California market value of the SR22 is around $500 and the 5000 rounds is more or less $300, i think its a pretty fare trade.

I own an SR22 and I'll tell you right now it eats everything I've fed it with the kind of appetite that's unstoppable. It's accurate, durable and just plain fun to shoot. Now back in the late 90's I owned a USP V1 9mm that I traded for a motorcycle and truthfully I miss it. I would give my Ruger for a USP any day of the week but my USP for the SR22..? I don't think I would. You also might consider you can go buy a new USP if you want to replace it in the future but you have to get a used SR22 from a private party if your lucky.

Look beyond the trade value of each and assess how much you really like the SR22 (and the ammo it comes with) vs your USP.

Considering you don't shoot your USP much anymore, do you really want to keep it? If you get the SR22, would you really shoot it? If you are trading for the sake of getting equivalent dollar value, then you haven't done much.

Trade for what you like using stuff that you don't - that's a winning trade (in my perspective at least)

I paid 600 for a sr22 that came with 1600 rds and 5 magazines

The SR22 is a great little pistol. As mentioned above, it eats whatever you feed it. I've yet to have any problems with it.

Why would you trade a real gun for a toy?

Do you have any other handguns in calibers larger then .22? If you have more handguns in 9mm or .45 then do it. But if you're trading away your only large caliber handgun I wouldn't do it.
