Are these legal in California?

Of course they're illegal. Zero fun allowed here.
Long ago, and not in CA, I knew a guy who mixed up some chemical I don't recall, and filled the front of some .45 hollow points. No boom, but a quite visible flash when they hit steel. Kind of like an inverse tracer. Very fun. So also illegal here.

Mercury fulminate, perhaps?

[hermosabeach]

Tannerite needs high velocity to detonate

It's normally set off with 2500+ fps rifles.

How could this work with airsoft?

I don't think that is an airsoft rifle shooting those lead pellets...

I haven't looked in years, but there used to be rimfire tannerite that subsonic 22 could set off, that also could be ignited by a fireworks fuse. Probably using something similar to that.

There are too many irresponsible nods in California to allow fun stuff that is legal in other states.

Here is just one example of a couple that gets a Darwin award.

Do common grey squirrels pose some risk to life/limb/property that I am unaware of?

Some risk that justifies nerds like this guy shooting them for funsies?

If there is some legit need to do this, great, do your thing.

If not, and you are just wasting squirrels for the yucks... you just might be a dickhead who never outgrew the childhood practice of roasting bugs with a magnifying glass.

Edited to add: Sounds like there is a reasonable reason for this. I withdraw my accusatory a-hole post. I won't delete it; I believe in owning my a-hole-ness.

Spoken like someone who has never lived around squirrels. You're probably surfing the wrong site if you don't like hunting or varmint eradication.

Yes they do, especially in those numbers. Watch the next video youtube loads after that one, and you'll see the damage they have done to his roof. Not as prolific as Eastern Fox Squirrels in Calif, so not up to par on the damage they do. Chewing insulation off of phone lines and power lines is a hobby of theirs too, sometimes causing fires. Then you have plague carriers and Hanta virus from their droppings. This is why they're called tree rats. A pellet to the brain pan, is a lot more humane than poison grain.

California classifies tree squirrels as small game mammals.

Fair enough. My original post edited.

That's an interesting concept! However, when it comes to legality, it’s best to check California's specific laws regarding explosive materials and ammunition. It can get pretty complicated, so consulting a local authority or legal expert might be a good idea.
