Long ago, and not in CA, I knew a guy who mixed up some chemical I don't recall, and filled the front of some .45 hollow points. No boom, but a quite visible flash when they hit steel. Kind of like an inverse tracer. Very fun. So also illegal here.

I don't think that is an airsoft rifle shooting those lead pellets...

I haven't looked in years, but there used to be rimfire tannerite that subsonic 22 could set off, that also could be ignited by a fireworks fuse. Probably using something similar to that.

Some risk that justifies nerds like this guy shooting them for funsies?

If there is some legit need to do this, great, do your thing.

If not, and you are just wasting squirrels for the yucks... you just might be a dickhead who never outgrew the childhood practice of roasting bugs with a magnifying glass.

Yes they do, especially in those numbers. Watch the next video youtube loads after that one, and you'll see the damage they have done to his roof. Not as prolific as Eastern Fox Squirrels in Calif, so not up to par on the damage they do. Chewing insulation off of phone lines and power lines is a hobby of theirs too, sometimes causing fires. Then you have plague carriers and Hanta virus from their droppings. This is why they're called tree rats. A pellet to the brain pan, is a lot more humane than poison grain.
