So whats the deal with airguns and supressors in CA?

I have some Co2/ multipumps that are loud and I want to be a good neighbor, has there officially been a ruling on this?

I'm contemplating building something that would only mount to a specific airgun muzzle via set screw, therefore being not possible to mount to an actual firearm without manufacturing a completely new device in addition with baffles made of material that would not withstand actual firearms pressures something like aluminum sheet metal.

I had called and spoke to an ATF agent in California and he stated that they in essence look the other way. When I asked for a specific 'ruling' he simply stated that they would take a case by case study....a BS line.
Most of the newer air rifles have shrouds and the shrouds are the 'silenced' piece, NOT the actual barrel. The barrels are basically shrouded from the breech to beyond the muzzle, so the projectile actually travels through space to exit the shroud and 'silencer'.

Are they legal on a firearm, no not yet, are they legal on an air rifle, according to the guy that I spoke with, maybe.

They are legal on airguns, many airguns come from the mfr with integral suppressors, most of Gamo's break barrels are suppressed, Benji Marauders have a shrouded barrel wit baffles..Check out TKO to see if the have something for your guns

No "maybe" about it. An air rifle is not a firearm.

I believe they're allowed on airguns as long as they're an integral part of the barrel and you cannot remove the suppressor and put it on another gun.

"No "maybe" about it. An air rifle is not a firearm. "
I did not state that an air rifle is a firearm, that's why there are commas in between the two in my sentence.
I stated that a firearm is not legal yet (there is legislation upcoming from what I have read for a firearm).
I understand that an air rifle is not a firearm. Everyone should understand that.

The correct term for any quieting device on and Airgun is LDC, Moderator or internal moderator. These "silencers" are applied to powederburners only. The use of the word silencer is taboo in the Airgun world. The LDC "Lead Dust Collector" or moderators are perfectly legal here in CA, most modern Airguns all come with these as part of the design. These are incapable of being used on a firearm as they were never intended to be.

                          Very good points.

Even the title of the thread brings unnecessary attention to the actual issue. Airguns are fundamentally different from powder burners but to assume our beloved legislature won't make up some problem that "needs fixing" is naive. Don't ask for trouble by loose terminology. When in doubt, PM privately for advice.

Its a grey area. In other words its CA and you will go to jail.

                              Correct.

They are legal in CA, no worries.
Otherwise Big 5 and other stores would not be selling them.
