    Fox Problem! Suggestions needed

So I have a few Grey Foxes that have decided to start eating cats around my property. Caught 2 of them on security cameras stalking one of my barn cats which is now MIA. Never been an air gun guy but have some new neighbors from the big city and they freak every time a gun goes off out here. Yes I'm out in the sticks but still have neighbors within 1/4 mile. Since the Foxes only come at night I'd prefer to be quiet instead of the neighbor calling the Sheriff again. I've shot my .22 single six with shorts but the neighbor still called the Sheriff. That's another story though as I know the deputies and they just laugh.
What would be a good air gun for foxes and other small fur bearers?

i would leave the foxes, they terminate a lot more rodents than your barn cats.

Dogs around here go inside at night otherwise they'd chase the bears all night long.

The first thing to do is learn and follow CA law. You'll either need a hunting license and to follow hunting regs or a trapping license and follow trapping laws. After you decide which set of laws you're going to follow to harvest the foxes, we can help you decide which legal method of take will work best for you.

Oh then you need 3 of these Anatolia Shepherd Dogs to take care of the bears.

5 dogs there should not be anything but fleas around your house for 10 miles.

Remington Cbee .22 ammo. Almost as quiet as an air rifle but a lot more wallop.

Standard air gun wouldn't kill a fox - at least not in a humane manner. If you really need to get rid of the foxes get a live trap and relocate them.

Desert Kit Fox and Red Fox are protected mammals (can not be taken for any reason).

Grey Fox are classified as furbearing mammals.
Which means you will need a valid hunting license in order to legally take them in CA.
Grey Fox season is from November 24 through February 29. (it's illegal to take them outside of those days)
There is no bag limit on Grey Fox.

It's illegal to take a furbearing mammal with an airgun.
Need to use a firearm, bow & arrow, or traps.

It's illegal to take a furbearing mammal with lead projectile ammunition.
                      Need to use non-lead ammo.

                      Fish & Game Code 461
                      (b) Gray fox may be taken as follows:
                      (1) Season and Area: November 24 through the last day of February, statewide.
                      (2) Bag and Possession Limit: No limit.
                      (3) Dogs may be permitted to pursue gray fox in the course of breaking, training, or practicing dogs in accordance with the provisions of Section 265 of these regulations.

                      Fish & Game Code 465
                      (a) Furbearing mammals may be taken only with a firearm, bow and arrow, or with the use of dogs, or traps in accordance with the provisions of Section 465.5 of these regulations and Section 3003.1 of the Fish and Game Code. The take or attempted take of any furbearing mammal with a firearm shall be in accordance with the use of nonlead projectiles and ammunition pursuant to Section 250.1. The take or attempted take of any furbearing mammal with a firearm shall be in accordance with the use of nonlead projectiles and ammunition pursuant to Section 250.1.
                      (b) Pursuant to Fish and Game Code Section 2003, it is unlawful to offer any prize or other inducement as a reward for the taking of furbearers in an individual contest, tournament, or derby.

                      Fish & Game Code 466
Furbearers may be hunted at any hour of the day or night except that they may not be taken between one-half hour after sunset and one-half hour before sunrise in the area described in Section 474(a) of these regulations.

                      Fish & Game Code 700
                      (b) Possession of Hunting License: Every person, while engaged in taking any bird or mammal Shall have on their person or in their immediate possession a valid hunting license.

First off, educate your neighbors. They moved to the country where things aren't the same as the city. If they are totally anti gun, there are ways to sway them.
If you can't take care of business you need not live in the country.

I'm on your side. Not a legal pedagogue. If the neighbors call LE to the point of being a nuisance to them. Let the LE educate them as to country life. Either that or the neighbors will tire of calling repeatedly with no satisfaction and give up.

I also believe that you have the right to defend your domestic animals on your own property without state permission or tolls. Just as you can defend yourself or family members. That's not "hunting furbearers". That's personal defense.

Pistols are loud no matter what ammo because of the short barrel. Aquila sub sonic 22 RF in a rifle is as quiet as most air rifles. My Sheridan Blue Streak 5mm would dispatch a fox with no problem. 10 pumps and done. Under 30 yds it will shoot through a fox side to side.

                              Pet control options

A longer barrel 22lr bolt or lever action with CCI quite 22lr works very well. About 700 fps and 47 ft pounds of energy.
As for air rifles a .22 cal or larger baffled or shrounded barrel. The spring piston guns are cheaper but not as powerful, $150-$400 .
The pre charge (hi pressure air tank guns) are much more accurate and powerful as well quite, but expensive. $450-$2000.
I have the FX Impact in .25 cal ,970 fps and 50 plus foot pounds. Very quiet and accurate expensive, $2000.
Cci quite 22LR maybe your best choice for the money.
                              Thanks John
