Headed to Vegas and Qs about transport

I've looked high and low and still can't figure this out. I have a CCW and I'm headed to Vegas. Plan was to carry to the state line and lock my firearm unloaded in a case then throw the case in my bag.

Seems we can open carry in the car once we cross into NV. In fact it has to be visible vs concealed but it can be in a compartment like the glovebox or armrest. OK got that part so far.

What about getting from car to my room at the hotel? This is where I'm confused. Seems carrying a unloaded and locked firearm is still considered concealed carry and you need a Nevada recognized CCW permit. How the heck do people in NV get their handguns out of their car????? I suppose I could open carry but definitely don't want the attention.... help!!!

Nevada law defines concealed as "concealed upon your person". You can legally open carry or place loaded gun anywhere in your car loaded as car is considered an extension of your home. Locked and unloaded in your luggage is fine for transport into hotel. Remember that concealed is concealed and if its in your luggage no one will know.

Does NV have a safe travel/passage clause. I know when I drive from CA to GA I checked and each state had a safe passage law. Hell, concealed means concealed. Who will know if you are carrying as most non gun people wouldn't have the slightest idea what to look for? Just don't do anything stupid and you shoyld be fine.

NV case laws defines "conceal upon your person" to also include being in an unlocked portable container, such as a purse/bag/pack/case.

Unloaded and in a locked container (bag/case/pack/etc) is a legal method of transporting a firearm.

        So...
unloaded handgun + locked portable container = transporting (no permit required)
unloaded handgun + unlocked portable container = concealed carry (need valid carry permit)
loaded handgun + unlocked portable container = concealed carry (need valid carry permit)
loaded handgun + locked container = concealed carry (need valid carry permit)

^^^ thanks, this would be correct info. Just called LV Metro PD and I was directed to the firearms dept. They said it's confusing because there's no law that actually states you can't carry a unloaded weapon in a locked container therefore "It's not illegal".

That said... I told them I was confused and I was advised to open carry when in doubt because it's totally legal per the letter of the law. Gotta love Nevada!

Just be careful not to LOC in a casino. Its not illegal, however, it is private property and they will not allow you to remain there with a firearm. Also, be careful carrying on the strip if you are going there. Again, its not illegal to LOC without a permit but it will scare the tourists and you may well get a visit from LVMPD. Just use good judgement and you will be fine!

I would LOC to the front desk and then my room. I wouldn't LOC in the casino(s) unless you just want attention of the wrong kind. Anyone know if "No Guns" signs carry the force of law in NV?

The strip is at your discretion. I've read reports of some here LOCing on the strip and having no issue and some getting a "visit" for LVPD and nothing coming of it. Haven't seen anything about anyone being jacked up by LVPD on the strip. Most people don't even realize what you have on your hip when they see it, OC is such a non-big deal in states where it's legal.

Two points to make on this.....

                1. DO NOT LOC to the front desk in a casino. You will be stopped and perhaps jacked up by the hotel security or be asked to leave and if you have reservations, which you have paid for you can kiss your room goodbye!

                2. Just because something is legal does not mean its a good idea. Yes, LOC is legal in Nevada, however LV has a lot of tourists in it (Many from California) and if you are made carrying it is possible that LVMPD could get a call for "man with a gun". That may not end well for you. Stop at state line and put your unloaded your gun and put it in your luggage. Check in to the hotel and leave it in your room.

If you want to carry than get a Nevada CCW and conceal. I carry in LV several times a year and I have a Nevada CCW. Concealed is much better!!

I would respectfully disagree. I've done it a few times myself (the Marriott off the strip AND the Cosmopolitan on the strip. I'm not sure anyone even noticed I had a gun on). The Marriott had a "casino" but it was small, but the Cosmo required me to walk thru the casino to get to my room. No issues at all. I didn't stop at the bar or the machines, just right to the elevator and up to the room. When I came back down I didn't have gun on me. Just my $0.2 worth.

I'm not saying it can't be done. I'm saying that it MAY cause a problem. Certainly one that I am not willing to take a chance on. ALWAYS better to conceal is what I'm suggesting. Case in point is about seven years ago I was on the strip with my kids walking and LVMPD had some guy spread eagle on the concrete in front of Bally's. Turned out the guy was LOCing and someone called in the proverbial "man with a gun". Guy was doing nothing illegal, however, the guy was scared s******* because of it. They finally let the guy go after about thirty minutes of being detained and having four cops point their guns at the guy. Add to that it was July and about 110 in the shade. All I'm saying is better to conceal as I was doing that day as I stood there and watched this poor guy. No one knew I was carrying and I had no problems as a result. Get a Nevada CCW. Problem solved!

                      From personal experience...

If they discover you are carrying a firearm, they will ask you to do one of the following:
                      1. Secure the firearm with hotel/casino security.
                      2. Secure the firearm in your room.
                      3. Secure the firearm in your vehicle.
                      4. Leave the property.
                      5. Keep it concealed (only if you have a valid carry permit).
Refusal to comply, results in a contact with NV LEOs for trespassing.
