So I got pulled over and ticketed this weekend...

Yea, I was speeding but not much more than traffic. I was merging onto the freeway and had to clear a few cars and got pulled over real quick.

About me, I'm clean cut, mid 40's male, driving a Lancer evo with aftermarket exhausts. I was with my wife at the time, about 1 pm in the 605 area of Downey. I had my ccw and my 3 week old permit at the time.

As I pulled over I had my license, ltc permit in hand, ignition off and other hand on the steering wheel. I handed him my dl and permit and was very respectful. I could already tell that he was surprised about the permit and asked me what it was for and I said self defense. I knew right away that he was going to treat me differently by his tone. I was asked to exit the car with my hands out the window. I was searched top to bottom VERY thoroughly and then put in the back of the squad car while he ran my info.

I've never felt like a criminal before until that moment, he had a very authoritarian tone and I had a bruised hand at the time from training jiu jitsu practically every day and when I crossed my fingers for the search he crunched them down hard and I was inpain but didn't say anything.

Why did that have to happen? Yea I was speeding but who hasn't gone 10 over the speed limit? Why couldn't he just write the ticket without me having to sit in the back of the squad car? I felt a little violated about the whole thing..

Why do some of the LE people seem to have such a god complex that they seem to feel threatened by someone like me. A clean cut law abiding citizen who is armed..

i seriously doubt things like that will ever change...sounds like you ran into a LEO who isn't comfortable coming into contact with anyone else legally carrying a firearm, other then himself

im going to disregard your attire, honestly, it means nothing, and, LE are trained not to judge people solely on how they are dressed, age, or, even the vehicle they drive...it could cost them their life

you could've just as easily been pulled over by another CHP officer who wouldn't have treated you that way...if you feel it was solely due to the fact that you are a CCW holder, well, this is sad to hear

i don't see a problem with any LEO trying to keep everything safe, but, some may well do it with a harder hand than others...keep the faith

Is it a training issue? Are they indoctrinated into this mentality? Is this even a California thing?

It sure was not what I was expecting to be treated as such..

I will answer your question from the point of view of a LEO who has conducted more traffic stops than I can remember.

IN LA County, LTC permits are uncommon. Really uncommon. As a "pro-gun" guy I wholly endorse them for any and all law abiding citizens. If I am to assume the incident happened just as you say, I personally would have handled it differently, although CHP was well within legal standing to temporarily detain you while checking the LTC. I don't work for CHP so I don't know all about their tactics and such.

I personally would thank you for showing me the LTC and I would run it along with the CDL, reg, etc. It would have no bearing whatsoever on whether you were to be cited, nor would I put you in my back seat. However, as I said, it is the officer's prerogative on the scene to make that call.

I don't have a God complex, nor do I feel threatened by LTC'ers. And by the way, if you have a pre-existing injury you should mention it as you are about to be searched so as not to exacerbate it or cause discomfort.

            Just my .02

You didn't mention if you even had your weapon on your person? Was it on your person or in another part of the vehicle?

There've been numerous posts relating positive experiences with CHP, so there's no evidence, not even a preponderance of anecdotes, that it's widespread in CHP. That particular officer, based on the only info available here (your narrative) seems to possibly have an issue. I haven't noticed any pattern in the posts here other than a generally positive or neutral trend. Since the sample of info is pretty small, I'd hesitate to form any kind of generalized conclusion.

The only thing I can speak to personally is one interaction with a local PD motor officer in Northern CA. It was a positive interaction, no problems whatsoever.

I had my ccw in my waistband holster and an extra mag in my left from pocket, sorry forgot to mention that..

Had I known my fingers were going to get smashed I would've said something, it's not in pain until at that moment and by then it was too late. My feet were spread apart about 4 ft and I'm only 5'9"

Couple questions, did he take you weapon from you? Did you get a ticket?

Sorry to hear this, that is SERIOUSLY messed up. My feeling is that since it is an OC permit and they MUST honor it they are a little butt hurt.

I am in no shape or form a cop hater, actually quite the opposite, but this pisses me off big time!!

I have made previous posts that I am seeing situations like this posted more and more frequently by law abiding people. I sincerely hope the younger officers on this forum take note. Believe it or not, law enforcement needs the support of the community. Incidents like this feed the fire that LE has turned against the population at large.

Maybe you should look up the meaning of "law abiding"

I have been on both ends of treatment from the CHP, from treated amazing well one time to unbelievably terribly another (roughed up, thrown to ground, gun held to head, roughly handcuffed, thrown on the hot hood of the CHP car) in a case of mistaken identity. Actually, it was my car that was mistaken, not me, but it was me that got roughed up, not my car. Trust me, as a white guy of Irish descent, I look nothing like three black guys that robbed a pizza parlor with a shotgun, but WTF does that matter?

Yes he took my weapon when I was spread eagle and fingers smashed, **** still hurts..

I got a ticket for 75 in a 65, like I said I was merging onto the freeway and had to either slow or speed up to clear a few cars that we're moving with the flow of traffic..

I was cheerful and respectful in the beginning but it wore off while sitting in the backseat of his car while my wife was roasting inside my hot car with no a/c. My wife walked out of the car because of the heat and he yelled at her to get back in so disrespectful. I was running out of patience but kept it cool.

Make a complaint to CHP if you feel it was over the top. His badge number is on the ticket.

I had a similar experience with CHP, I got pulled over for using the GPS on the phone while driving, luckily my LAPD buddy was my passenger.

When I gave him the license and permit, he maintained a very authoritarian attitude and tone asking where the gun was until my LAPD buddy showed him his badge. Then he was very cool from then on (no ticket issued either).

That's just how CHP rolls apparently. I'm 99% certain if my buddy wasn't there with his credentials that I would have gotten a ticket.

For just the above possibility, I have been a much more careful driver since obtaining my CCW. It is an unfortunate incident given the officers reaction would likely have been very different had you been CCW'ing under LEOSA. That said, the benefits of carrying vastly outweigh the humiliation of the roust. Also, just because CHP officer carries a badge and a gun, does not mean he is pro CCW or pro 2nd amendment. Thanks for telling of your experience...A reminder
