I don't have a concealed carry permit and I'm unlikely to ever get one where I currently live. But I am curious about concealed carry. From what I've read, IWB holsters are one of the more popular ways to CC. So do those people end up with two sets of pants: one set with a larger waist size for CC, and one set with actual waist size for time when not carrying? And how much does one typically add to their normal waist size to get comfortable and functional pants for IWB carry?

2" is generally given as the amount to add. But, as always, YMMV.

I have one size. But then I always carry. I also use a holster that doesn't collapse when my gun is out.

It depends

I never got comfortable with IWB, even with the best holsters out there. Sure, the gun would disappear, I just did not like how it felt throughout the day and it's not convenient at all to get rigged up. I only carry pocket or OWB anymore - I've never had a problem with exposure and either way is veeeerrrrrry comfortable. These methods also work with all the pants/shorts I already own.

Depends upon where in your current pant size you are -

Let's say you are tight in a 36 waist - go up one size - if you are on the loose end of a 36 - then stay there (and for what it's worth - I haven't seen a 36 since 1982)

Then get a good - stiff - wide - belt.

How does one CCW OWB? It seems you'd need to always wear a suit or other long jacket.

I wear pant that are a little looser on my naturally, the difference is which hole I use on the belt, one tighter for no gun, one looser if I'm packin'. It's really up to the carrier and the body type I guess.

Most people have one size because when they start carrying, they always carry. On the rare occasion I have to go to a gov't office where ccw is prohibited I simply cinch up the belt one notch.

Not really, with shorts and a t-shirt a size larger I have been able to carry a Sig p220 with no issues. You just have to adjust your wardrobe a bit to fit the circumstances, and remain comfortable.

Same pants either way for me.

It is a pain to get dressed; my holster wants to grab my underwear - it does take longer to get dressed in the morning, but otherwise it is no big deal.

As others have said, the most important thing you need is a GOOD belt, I would have never considered spending $100 on a belt, but it was with every penny. (I think my BeltMan belt was something like $115 shipped.

From experience, there isnt "one formula" to determine pants to gun pairing. Some smaller guns will fit with your old pants, while some of the service size guns will need a size larger. The location of the iwb matters to, for me, i can pretty much have a service size gun in the small of my back and still wear my "fitted" pants, however, move that between 2-4 o'clock position and the same holster/gun combo will not fit. Its all about experimenting and finding out what works best for you. For some of us who are "fashionably aware", getting bigger, baggier pants is just not acceptable.

Walmart carries a Wrangler pant that has a stretch waistband. They are about $17 and come in alot of sizes. I get my normal size,use a Crossbred Supertuck IWB holster for all my handguns. It helps that I have the Wilderness Tactial belt in black and tan that adjusts easily. I can carry wearing a t-shirt and not print. If you get a Crossbred get the horsehide. Much better than the cowhide.I have bought from Crossbred's Crossbredseconds.com and and been very pleased with these holsters.
