    WARNING for LTCers

Federal agent gets killed stopping pharmacy robbery (for $$$ and pain killers).

They haven't released info re who shot whom (the BG, the fed agent, an off-duty LEO, and a retired LEO were all involved in the incident).

Lesson from this article I'm posting here are the examples given at the end of the article where LEOs have killed other (undercover/plain clothes) LEOs by mistake. If that happens to a fellow LEO, you can be sure it can happen to a LTCer if a LEO mistakes him as the BG, or if the LTCer "comes to the aid" of LEOs in an incident in which the LTCer was not involved.

    From:
An off-duty federal law enforcement agent who died while confronting a pharmacy robber was picking up his elderly father's cancer medication, a New York congressman said Sunday.

In May, a New York Police Department officer shot to death an off-duty colleague who was carrying a gun while chasing a suspected car thief in East Harlem.

In March, an off-duty transit authority officer shot a Nassau County police officer who was in plainclothes and carrying a rifle while both men were responding to a crime in the town of Massapequa Park.

And in 2008, Westchester County police officers killed an off-duty officer from suburban Mount Vernon while he intervened in a fight.

    Shooting

Very unfortunate. Had an interesting discussion with a LEO friend of mine about what to do in the event we needed to draw our weapon in a public place such as a restaurant or retail store.

He had two interesting comments that I hadn't given much thought too. His first comment was, if it's a strong armed robbery such as what happened recently at a KFC near my home, his first action would be to scan the other patrons looking for the lay down guy. He says that this is becoming more and more common in these types of robberies. One or even two will hang back and not reveal themselves at first, in case they need to "dispatch" an off-duty LEO or LTC holder who draws their weapon.

His next comment was he'd try to find out if the establishment has a security guard, particularly an armed one.

It'd be a bummer to get shot by a guard, off-duty LEO or another LTC holder.

Well, one news outlet is reporting that "friendly fire" did kill the federal LEO. Appears the the retired LEO mistook him for a BG. (IOW, intentionally shot him, not a ND or missed his true target.) That seriously sucks for all involved....

Unlike LE we have no reponsiblity to chase down and apprehend bad guys. In fact we shouldnt be doing it. To do so only gives the anti-gun crowd more reason to label us as a bunch of gun toting vigilantes who want to play cop. We protect lives only. There is nothing in anyones store or cash register Im willing to either kill or die for. Let the bad guy have what he wants as long as no one gets hurt. As the story shows it's easy enough for cops to get killed and they have to apprehend them. We dont.

Things aren't always that easy. Numerous instances of BGs killing unarmed cooperative GGs, whether they be employees opening cash registers or bystanders.

Plus, if there's a mall shooter and I'm armed, I'm not just going to take off if I have a clear shot at an active shooter.

The main point of all of this is to make sure who you think is a BG is in fact a BG and don't shoot until you are darned sure.

Also, related, is to make sure you don't look like a BG by your words or actions as seen by some undercover/plainclothes/off-duty LEO who also happens to be there and thus may shoot you!

not sure about drawing my gun for any other reason than to "defend myself and my family", afterall, it is my good cause

unless people on here have stated as their good cause to "defend society", we should really NOT play vigilante; it is not our responsibility nor obligation

What has our world come to when we are not willing to help our fellow citizens when we can its just sad... I pray that if my wife and kids are out and something happens that someone will help if they can again I just cant say it enough its just sad what people have become...

You're right, and you're under no "responsibility nor obligation" to try to save someone else's kids. And no one else is under any "responsibility nor obligation" to try to save your kids.
