PC 171b

Today I had to go to the DMV Occupational Office in Van Nuys. It's inside a boring office block with an inner court yard. There's no metal detector and no security. Yet there was a sign in the hall pointing out that carrying a weapon is a felony under PC 171b.

I was carrying, as usual, but I was shocked when seeing this, so I walked back to my car and put my firearm in the trunk. Now I'd like to confirm that a CCW holder is indeed an exempt person under PC171b.

As a county worker, I personally witness, on an everyday basis, how dim the average public worker can be so IMO you did the right thing. Don't expect the union security person to know the PC.

I carry in the DMV all the time. Never had a problem.

I had to go to DMV a month ago for driver's license renewal and to get my REAL ID.
The line was so damn long here in San Diego, security people were too busy directing folks waiting in line. I didn't believe they would notice.

When I got to the front door, I looked for no gun sign but I couldn't find any and no PC 171b either hence I carried.

I had a light jacket on in the cold weather, this helped concealed nicely.

Thank you all, specifically Sky Hawk. To clarify, the Occupational Office is in a government building. Two Congressmen have their offices there too. Carrying in a regular DMV is definitely not against the law.

There are only a few public buildings that are off limits for CCW:

Otherwise, a public building where CCW is exempt is defined as:

(1)It is a building or part of a building owned or leased by the state or local government, if state or local public employees are regularly present for the purposes of performing their official duties. A state or local public building includes, but is not limited to, a building that contains a courtroom.
(2) It is not a building or facility, or a part thereof, that is referred to in Section 171c, 171d, 626.9, 626.95, or 626.10 of this code, or in Section 18544 of the Elections Code.
(3) It is a building not regularly used, and not intended to be used, by state or local employees as a place of residence

And while apparently legal to carry in court buildings, they will not let you and I assume it is legal for them to prevent you from doing so.
