Adding firearm to CCW

I do apologize if this is a repeat, I have looked and can not find this information.

About 35 days ago I took my CCW safety course, qualification, and obtained my permit. My permit is for a .40cal firearm. It is a larger gun and wanted something smaller. I purchased another .40cal firearm that needs to be added to my permit.

I reached out to the company about qualifying with the new firearm so I can take the certificate to the Sheriff's Department (San Diego).
They want me and say it's required to take another 2 hours safety class in order to qualify with my new firearm.
This doesn't pass the smell test for me and sounds like I'm being nickel and dimed.

Any input on the validity of that claim would be helpful.

I was under the impression that I only need to shoot my 50 rounds to qualify and that will get me my certificate. Maybe I'm wrong.

So you want this company to do this for free? Their perspective is this guy can't make up his mind and is "nickel and diming us" for help on changes. They've named their price. Pay it or find someone else to help you with your problem.

I've never heard of a 2-hour safety course as a requirement by the SD Sheriff department. Sounds like it's just policy of the particular facility or instructor. I'd pick another off the approved list.

For what it's worth, I just did my 4-hour renewal and qualification with Personal Protection Firearms Training. James is awesome and used The Gun Range on Balboa Ave. First time I've shot there and I liked it a lot. James did tell me specifically if I choose to switch out any of the three on my permit I just give him the serial make/model/caliber so he can have the certificate ready ahead of time and meet him at the range. Pay his fee, qualify, take certificate (assuming pass), and then log into SD Sheriff's new online system to make the change to your permit and pay the fee there.

You have to do whatever that instructor wants you to do. Policies and procedures vary by instructor. Find another instructor.

You have to qualify with your new gun and that requires you to go back to a company that does CCW certification...which means it will take some time and there will be a fee.

My guess is that the company you contacted is going to shove you into either a first time or a renewal CCW class (in my class these were one and the same and the renewals were simply done after the first four hours). And you will mostly join that class for the shooting portion of it...which probably also includes some safety talk, etc., and takes roughly two hours.

This doesn't mean it's a requirement. It's just how this entity manages and facilitates people who want to add another gun to their permit. It's easier for them to shove you into an existing class than it is to do something separate every time a person wants to add a new gun. I suspect you will find this to be the case with most of these classes. But if you're not happy about this, call around and see if somebody else does it differently.

I did my qualification for my add on gun about 3 weeks ago. It was free and only the 15 shots required. There was no class just the 10min of the range test. The only thing i paid for was 1hr of range time which was $16. He gave me my cert and now im just waiting to get my updated permit once sheriff licensing opens back up

Let's be clear. I never mentioned free once, you did. I do not mind paying what is fair. If I'm being told I need to pay and take a class that I don't need, that's not honest.

Thank you everyone else for the info. I believed it to be the case that I would have needed to find a place that will qualify me at the range and that is it. I will reach out to SDSO when all this lockdown is over with. I figured it would hurt to ask some of the experts and relieve some of my curiosity.

I only had to pick up an application from my issuing agency for a modification of my LTC permit, set up a range time with my certified instructor which I think was about 50 bucks for a one on one firearm qualification, he mailed the modification application and I picked up my new permit. No class time. FYI my issuing agency no longer does mods. You have to wait till your permit expires to add or modify to your permit or start the renewal all over again.

Correct. Worth looking into before spending the extra dough on a firearm and certified instructor.

Check out a local range.

Some have instructors that you can just show up and qualify at that range and they give you the certificate right there. Probably 20-30 bucks Max of range time plus ammo. This is how I always do my modifications.

Thats what i did last Friday for an add on gun. Booked the range time of an hour. Told them what i was there for. No problem, 18 shots total at the 3 distances, Signed me off and up loaded my qual paper work that after noon. Your results may very. Total Range cost, 20.00. Just waiting on the back log.....
