Besides your brain, hand to hand combat training and overall good judgment and situational awareness...there are a number of less lethal and non lethal tools out there. Stun guns, retractable batons, Mace, etc. What are the legalities, liabilities and benefits of carrying something in addition to your sidearm in Calif.?

i thought retractable batons was banned for carry. I would carry a gel pepper spray. -
yea. I remembered I asked my friend where I could buy good quality one, then he told me its illegal to have it.
My friend has SABRE Pepper Gel, it won't be blown back if its windy outside, specially in San Francisco. He used once when he was working in his garage with the garage door open, one guy came in with a knife and asked him for money, then my friend sprayed all over the guy's face to stop the robbery, later on the guy got caught.Comment

I carry pepper spray and a tactical pen ( Aircraft Aluminum ). Although if someone came at me with a knife like the first quote I'd use a handgun not the pepper spray. Someone with a knife is trying to kill you.
The pepper spray is for the guy I'm not afraid is going to kill me, but whom I don't want to have to fight hand to hand.
The pen is just as a last resort if I can't use my handgun.Comment

Personal alarms in the 120dB++ range and small pepper spray with dye in it. Marks your target for the cops.
Stout umbrella can be useful, but can be gripped away and used against you.
Flash light w/stobe feature for night time would have some value.
*when you're fighting for your life and NOT fighting dirty, you're doing it wrong.

Might technically be legal, but it looks too much like a baton to me to risk carrying it anywhere.
