Holster issues

Putting this out there for discussion.

I have my CCW permit and I just went to a local indoor range. I got talking to the guys behind the desk and they were asking what type of rigs I have been using. Like most everyone that carries I have a couple different holster types, I am currently using my Glock 26 in either my Alien Gear 3.0 or my Crossbreed SuperTuck as my EDC.

I have a couple minimalist Kydex holsters, i.e. a Vedder LightTuck, and I mentioned that I don't tend to use those cause I just can't seem to get them "comfortable." I know it is never "comfortable" to carry, but I am finding the larger holsters to be helping with that.

They then said that the only thing it has to do with the Kydex thickness that makes it so different in the comfort factor. And I should get one of their Kydex holsters cause it is much thinner Kydex, even wearing it at 4-5 o'clock IWB. I figured they were just trying to sell me another holster.

But does anyone else have an issue with the all Kydex holsters like this, being SO uncomfortable? I won't carry appendix, cause I just can't wrap my head around pointing a gun at my femoral artery. Please don't say, that I am just not familiar enough with my weapon to feel that way, because that isn't true. I am talking about the real substantial difference between an all Kydex minimalist holster and the larger AlieanGear and Crossbreed style holsters.

What anybody thinks about your carry technique and problems you may have with it is irrelevant unless they are with you to evaluate. Only you will be able to tell if a solution works for you. Regarding your gun range counselors, try this process:

1. Do any of the folks you spoke to at the range carry concealed?
-If no, ignore their input.
-If yes, go to #2.
2. Do they use the holster they are trying to sell you?
-If no, ignore their input.
-If yes, go to #3.
3. Will they let you test one of their holsters in the gun of your choice (your EDC)?
-If no, ignore their input.
-If yes, go to #4.
4. Did you like the holster and find that it solves your problem?
-If no, ignore their input, and go to #5.
-If yes, buy the holster.
5. Repeat process at other vendors.

Holster comfort is big issue for me. I tried two different all kydex styles and couldn't get comfortable with how they felt. I also didn't feel they were concealing well enough. This pushed me to my first hybrid, the AG 3.0. It was comfortable and concealed well. However, I didn't think the quality was great and it was hot to wear. This pushed me to the Crossbreed and I haven't really looked back. I did try a third style of all kydex holster just recently and I still didn't like it. It'll be good for a quick trip to the mailbox or an evening stroll, but for anything else it won't be comfortable.

To give you a picture of how I'm built, I'm 5'10" and 180lbs. I don't know people are comfortable with all kydex or appendix carry. I carry between 3 and 4 o'clock.

There are ways to make the kydex holster you already have more comfortable.

Kydex is Kydex, thinner isn't better especially in a fight where you might be grappling. It's also important to understand the wide variation allowed in production kydex. If the holster manufacture orders standard .08 and gets what amounts to .06 that is still in tolerance for the .08 order per the manufacture.

That aside, I would argue if you are carrying a G26 in a Alien Gear depending on version likely more holster than you need.

There are several different solutions, and they are going to depend on your body type, weight, limitations, clothing style, and types of activity. Having said that with a little effort there are adjustments to your existing selection of holsters that we can likely make them significantly more comfortable with out buying another or spending much.

Also it is completely possible to carry comfortably. The G26 isn't that hard for most people. The Vedder has sufficient adjustability, could do better but not bad. I think we should be able to make that work. What is the other Kydex holster you have.

Only had my CCW license for a month.....I tried Kydex, so-so, felt bulky.

Have gone with a simple, minimalist Sticky holster at 3:30 and it works great. Almost forget I even have it on me sometimes. No belt needed.

Holsters are as personal as the rest of your clothing. Try everything, keep what works. If you've carried for any time at all, you probably have a box of unused holsters. It's just part of the process. If you have a friend who carries, ask to look at his unused holsters; maybe you'll find what works for you there.

Maybe I'm the odd guy out here. I have 2 holster for my EDC, both made by the same manufacturer (TT Gunleather) and that's it. I really have no holsters for the other guns on my license since, well, I NEVER carry them.

One of my EDC holsters has belt clips that I use for daily carry and the other has belt loops that I use when on road trips where I won't be taking my rig on or off during the day. Should I decide to start carrying either of the other 2 guns on my license I would buy their holsters from the same manufacturer as my current holsters since the quality and comfort are outstanding.

As for AG, both the 2.0 and 3.0 were comfortable, but their constructions was, IMO, garbage. I figured since I have invested a good chunk of change into firearms, ammo and training (not to mention the cost of a CCW), why should I skimp on a poorly made holster. I tossed the AG holsters out in the end.

Personally I don't like Kydex touching my skin, creaps me out. Holsters like a Supertuck feel way to big though.

I found my best solution is a Crossbreed Quikclip or equivalent. It's like a Supertuck but with only one clip and the clip is designed for easy on and off.


But the real trick is not the holster but the belt. I use De Santis Econobelts. Not overly expensive, look just like a dress belt but the stoutness of the belt holds the gun and holster in tight and secure. Even when carrying my full size Smith 1006 10mm

you are not the odd guy out there. I have carried for more than a year and coming up on renewal. One EDC... IWB holster... TT Gunleather. Solid work. Feels like I am not carrying at all. so comfortable. Long trips... short trips. Good to go. I do agree... everyone needs to find what works for them.

I couldn't find an IWB holster that didn't drive me crazy until I found this. Now, I hardly notice I'm wearing it. The best part is you can carry with any belt or no belt at all. You can also move it to any position that is comfortable for you (3:30 for me) and it stays put. No Kydex or sweaty leather against your skin.

if I may - I have looked at this couple of ways (had CCW for about 3 years now)

I'm big on comfort. I have a large belly and appendix is great for concealment but tough on comfort AND accessibility.

I mean - how much good is it to be comfy if you can't get at it when you need it?

I swore I wouldn't but I've tried a BUNCH of different holsters. I have kydex for my Glock 23 and my M&P Shield .40 - both from Overwatch Holsters. Both have served me very well and at 3/3:30 I can go 500 miles on my motorcycle and have a hard time telling they are there. Yet i can still get at them if i need to. My Bersa Firestorm is so small I usually carry it in the gun pocket of my cut.

I would have to agree. When people say "Alien Gear" all I can think of is a tiny shield or G26 stuffed in a 7" wide holster wrapping from 3o'clock all the way to 7 oclock.

I use Kydex, I actually bought from Packin Fur a tuck able holster for business professional attire at work, but I have found myself using it 100% exclusively for any clothing I wear. Its minimalist at its finest. I havent bought bigger clothes to accommodate my carry, I made my holster accommodate my clothes and style. I wear shorts and board shorts in the summer and sandals and jeans in the winter.

I found this holster after buying and trying 5 or more. They started out as the crossbred and then got smaller each time. The only holster thats smaller than the tuckable is the sticky - which I have, but I havent mentally gotten comforatble with no clip.

After several years of struggling with holsters I have ended up with kydex. The ONLY exception being a clip draw and a Raven Concealment for a G42, or an ankle holster for when I absolutely cannot carry normally. I typically carry IWB, but yesterday had a holster made that is OWB. I had it made to match the depth of carry and angle of cant of my IWB rigs. I am fortunate and have a local Marine vet who makes holsters and will make whatever you need. It's much better than ordering online for drawer tenants, or fumbling around in a store.

If you want comfort, go OWB. Folks that say they print are OCD neurotic, nobody is looking. High ride, forward cant, 4 o'clock, tee shirt. Done.
