Transporting firearms

I have 2 guns on my permit and drive a pickup truck. If I go to the range and take both my carry guns and 1 or 2 more handguns not on the permit, am I only able to transport my 2 carry guns in the frontseat or can I have them all in the same case in the cab with me. Unloaded of course and ammo in back of truck. I figure if i'm legally able to have a loaded gun on me or in my vehicle, what's the harm in another unloaded one in a case. Probably a question for my IA, but curious if any of you guys have had the same thought. Thanks

for the ones not on the permit- unloaded and in a locked container. You can even have the ammo in the same case as long as there are no loaded mags inserted in the guns.

The guns on your permit may be loaded and transported concealed. The guns not on your CCW must be unloaded, in "locked container" but the container can be anywhere in the vehicle or they must be locked in the trunk (if not in a "locked container"). Your CCW guns can be loaded and in the same container as the non-CCW guns.

For reference:

(a) Section 25400 shall not be construed to prohibit any citizen of the United States over the age of 18 years who resides or is temporarily within this state, and who is not prohibited by state or federal law from possessing, receiving, owning, or purchasing a firearm, from transporting or carrying any pistol, revolver, or other firearm capable of being concealed upon the person, provided that the following applies to the firearm:
(1) The firearm is within a motor vehicle and it is locked in the vehicle’s trunk or in a locked container in the vehicle.
(2) The firearm is carried by the person directly to or from any motor vehicle for any lawful purpose and, while carrying the firearm, the firearm is contained within a locked container.
(b) The provisions of this section do not prohibit or limit the otherwise lawful carrying or transportation of any pistol, revolver, or other firearm capable of being concealed upon the person in accordance with the provisions listed in Section 16580.

As used in CA PC 25610 the term "locked Container" is defined by CA PC 16850

As used in this part, “locked container” means a secure container that is fully enclosed and locked by a padlock, keylock, combination lock, or similar locking device. The term “locked container” does not include the utility or glove compartment of a motor vehicle.

Actually, from my reading of the law, the locked container can be within the vehicle. It is that the unloaded gun (not in a locked container) could be placed in the trunk. As long as the gun is in a locked container (even if in the car/truck) with you, you are fine.

Yes, but you could also put the locked container in the trunk if you wanted, thus the locked container can "be anywhere in the vehicle".
