I always thought the Issuing agency did the live scan.

Why not the 9mm? Easier too shoot in a compact gun and adds +1 round.

So on your initial interview date your investigator told you you're approved and to start your live scan? No good cause needed? No conditional approval?

Are you a LEO because you mentioned you're going to look into the M&P 40 as they're off roster'd, then again if you're a LEO you wouldn't need to get approved from OCSD to conceal carry.

Are the OCSD doing something different now?

My initial I bright photos and police reports of a self defense case I was involved in as a juvenile. They immediately approved me and the 40 is on roster

So you were approved before the live scan and the background check? Or did they approve you to continue with the process?

Approved, now what?

They must have sped up their process because here is my timeline:

Day 0: Submitted request for interview
Day 0: (an hour later) Received interview date (6 months out)
Day 191: Went to interview
Day 196: Since my CCW firearm was not registered I had to submit a DOJ Intra-Familiar Transfer form
Day 213: LiveScan fingerprinting
Day 213: Submitted all supporting documentation that was requested from initial interview
Day 233: Received conditional approval
Day 237: Completed the required training and qualification
Day 238: Submitted training certificate and qualification form
Day 252: Still no word on the Intra-Familiar transfer. OCSD (and my CCW) is stuck until it is cleared
Day 262: Purchased what is to be my EDC (not the original one with which I qual'ed). DROS started
Day 272: Pickup up new firearm and CCW-qualified with it
Day 273: Submitted new qualified paperwork for new firearm and asked that this new one be on the CCW and not the original firearm (since it is still being cleared)
Day 275: Received final appointment to pick up CCW license (with only second firearm on it)
Day 280: Picked up CCW license

Total time:

• 280 days
• 9 months, 7 days
• 40 weeks
• 76.71% of a year

This all happened here in OC fairly recently.

Most comfortable fit for my hand. Anything G19 size and bigger is too large for me to comfortably conceal.

Have you ever shot one in 40? Are you accurate with it?

You should also weigh other factors than just comfort when you decide your carry weapon.

I was about to purchase my firearm and someone told me that I have to wait until the Sheriff sends me a letter saying that I've been approved, only until then can I take the training and I have to do it within a 30 day window. Then an instructor told me that's not true, I will not be receiving a letter. What the hell is going on? I'm going to call the sheriff tomorrow and ask. I had 3 people tell me 3 completely different things. I know, only trust the issuing department for information, but they're closed for the weekend. Glad it came up! Thanks for everyone's help. Cop told me last year it was taking up to 9 months to get the actual CCW card, but this year it's only about 2 months from the initial. Said to get the training and lives can done ASAP so nothing gets delayed. I did the livescan the same day of the interview

After OCSD receive your livescan results, if cleared, you will receive an conditionally approval email to move on with training. Some people take the risk and do the training before receiving the conditional approval email. If you were some how denied, you're now out $200+ dollars. Also the training is only valid for 6 months, so if your livescan somehow took longer than that or other delays, well then you're also out of luck.

For my initial CCW and renewal, I waited for the conditional approval email before moving forward with training.

Purchasing a firearm is always a good thing. Nothing wrong about it. You can even do you're training before hand if you like. But just know that if you get denied, you will NOT get reimbursed what ever fee you've put thru to get as far as you've got (gun, live scan and training). Some people wait till they get the conditional approval to proceed w training (least that's what I did) some do it before hand taking a risk whether or not they get approved.

Now, I'm pretty sure when you went into the initial interview your investigator probably mentioned this,
1. Everything looks good! Start your live scan if you haven't already
2. If we have any further questions, we will contact you, but if you haven't already started your live scan please do so!

Noticed how live scan pops up on almost all points?? They will most like not approve you w/out a live scan. Also, they can not approve you on the initial interview because they'll need to do a residence check as well.

It's not the interview who does the approvals. It goes up the chain of command. They (investigator, deputy's, interviewer) are there to only gather your package so they can submit for final approval. When your live scan returns, residency check is complete and egood cause is sufficient... you will then receive a conditional approval thru email stating, if you haven't already done your training to get it done and submit it.

Hello, I went to the Santa Ana office today and got approved to carry. Now I need to get a livescan, purchase the firearm I had in mind, and get my training. The interviewing officer was very helpful, he also said the time now from your initial appointment to when you get the card is approximately two months. Going to a gunshow tomorrow to look for M&P 40 cals.

Where is the best place for a livescan? Any pointers on the order I handle this stuff? The officer wanted me to get it done as soon as possible and email him my confirmations so it does not delay the process.

You weren't approved "approved to carry", you weren't even conditionally approved. You were just told to get your Livescan. The interviewer was confident your Good Cause is ok so that's why he said to get Livescanned.
