Thanks so314 and crazyscott90. This makes much more sense now. I'm assuming all they need to do is access the doj system to review your livescan.
Do you see any risk of completing training too early? They want it to be "fresh" on your mind (how the interviewer stated it).
In my opinion, the riskiest filter is the psyche test. They are looking for consistency and "good character" traits. Even if they say there are no wrong answers, i'm sure there are.Sic Semper.Comment

The reason I did my livescan early was because of reports that livescan can take 1-2 months to complete. I was willing to risk the $117 livescan fee in exchange for the potential of speeding up my application process by 1-2 months. However, new reports show that ccw livescans are processed within a week. If I had known this, I probably would have just waited until after the psych eval to do it.
I wouldn't risk doing the training early, because a) it costs $400+, b) you don't know if you'll get approval after the psych eval, c) you don't know how long it will take to get a decision, especially after they took on hundreds of applicants from the interview clinics. It's not like the training takes a lot of time to complete either, you can easily finish it within a week or two after getting approval (depending on your schedule, I guess).Comment

Defensive Accuracy sounds good as I live only about 20 minutes from Coyote Sporting Clays and I have shot at the Cowboy range when I did some CAS.

I believe the reason SCC refused your SJPD livescan is because a scan cannot be shared between agencies.Comment

I completed my Psych Eval Step 2 (interview) on 4/25. I think we have very much overthought the process. For me it was a quick 10 mins interview basically going over almost the same PsyQ / Background questions again. After PsyQ my interviewer was like: "Okay, we're done! I will send the results to your agency after you complete the post interview form". I was like: "Err.. is that it?". Interviewer: "Yeah, for candidates with clean background we generally want to keep the session as short as possible. Don't worry about it."
Then this afternoon I got a phone call from SCC notifying me I've been approved and should proceed with Livescan. I asked him what if I have already done my Livescan? He asked me to please wait a moment so he may check whether they have received the results. A few mins later he came back and said it is not there yet, and asked me when did I do the scans? I told him about a month ago. He then said "Oh okay, well.. you should wait another month or so. Then if we still have not received the results, you should go back to the office that did the scan for you and ask them to resend". So I'm guessing this implies it is okay to do Livescan prior to Psych Eval.
Also, it seems Livescan is still heavily backlogged. My scan results shows completed on 3/27 for DOJ + FBI and completed on 3/30 for Firearms. Even though it says completed on the Livescan status check site it is not actually completed / SCC doesn't have the results yet.
My timeline / progress:
3/23 - Interview at SCSO
3/27 - Live Scan
3/28 - Received email to schedule for Psych Eval Step 1 (written tests)
4/12 - Psych Eval Step 1 (written tests) + Schedule for Psych Eval Step 2 (interview)
4/25 - Psych Eval Step 2 (interview)
4/28 - Received phone call from SCSO saying my Psych Eval has been approved and should proceed with Live Scan.
5/04 - Received email from SCSO and Permitium saying my Live Scan has been approved and may proceed with Training.Last edited by sho69; 05-05-2023, 12:14 PM.Comment

I had a similar experience with the psych interview, only took 15 minutes or so and was mainly a repeat of the PsyQ questions.Comment

I think the riskiest part of the process, like you mentioned, is the psych eval. Given the fact that the exact requirements to "pass" aren't public and not many people have gone through the entire process yet, it's hard to judge whether the average person will likely pass or fail the eval.
The reason I did my livescan early was because of reports that livescan can take 1-2 months to complete. Wow, you're lucky they called so soon. I finished my psych eval 2 weeks ago and also got a call this afternoon from a SCSO number, but unfortunately I was busy and missed it and my voicemail was full. I tried calling back but went unanswered. Will try again on Monday to see any news.

Unfortunately there is a lot of stigma around mental health these days. I see lots of posts on Reddit where people are concerned they will be denied their CCW for even talking with a psychologist, needing to take medications, etc. If the county is still trying to be anti-2A, it's entirely reasonable to assume they will use anything in your background as a reason to deny you. However, I hope that is not the case.
I did my LiveScan on 3/23, FBI+CA completed same day, firearms completed 3/29.Comment

I think I read somewhere the psych eval was multiple hours. I’m glad to hear it’s only been 15 minutes for some of you.

The second part of the psych eval, which is a meeting with a licensed psychologist via Zoom, was the one that took only 15 minutes.Comment

Interview was scheduled for 40 mins. Took less than 10 mins for me. My interview was at 10AM, interviewer joined a couple of mins late and I was done by 10:10.Comment

That sounds like good progress so far, especially if the 2nd part is just a short interview.
Where did you guys get your Livescan done? Thinking may as well get it over with and send it while waiting for my Psych Eval scheduling email to hit my inbox.
I plan on using the same office that processed my livescan for COE. Unless, SCC wants you to go to a particular livescan…Content Creator. You can call me Junior. RMB Enterprises 'Social Media' Guy.
