Last month I submitted a FOIA request with the City of SJ to get a count of the number of CCW?s issued by the SJPD. Two have been issued? both went to city officials. That means that, over the last year, no one has been issued a ?no cause? CCW by the SJPD.
They created a convoluted process and have run people through the ringer with two applications, multiple requests for checks to cover the permit fee, fingerprinting, classes, psych checks, and lots of waiting and not one CCW has been issued under this process. This sounds like it?s own brand of malicious compliance.
    Respectfully,
    SIGarette

I have also completed training. We then head to queue up approval through “chain of command”. Unsure how long this will take but wont be surprised if it takes months. I believe torqued_nut and I would probably be the first batch. From the info i gathered, they probably received less than 100 applications. The price for application and issue increased from $20 to $1300 to most likely reduce future applications. The original $20 price is honored for existing applications. I think people were diverting to SJPD because Santa Clara county has completely stalled.

SJPD also only has one officer processing. However he tends to respond and is a cool guy. Once you get past training it gets out of his hands and follow up/eta becomes difficult

Picked up my CCW today. It was straightforward and seamless. Timeline is below - a little less than 6 month process from interview to issuance.

        3/2/23 - Initial Interview
        3/6/23 - Livescan Request
        6/27 - Psyche Test Complete
        7/10 - Approved for Training
        8/24 - Pickup

People who applied later are progressing faster as they figure out this process.

The CCW is good for only 1 year. The cost of renewal and training should still be less than Santa Clara County (assuming no cost changes from today) if you look at annual cost.

Overall the process was much better than Santa Clara. Better communication overall. Though I'm on last phase at SCC, I will be withdrawing my application there.

Last fun fact: SJPD's license will look very different than Santa Clara County - using a blue theme instead of SCC's Green.

          1 year expiration date?!

Guess they’re waiting for SB2 to kick in.

What was the cost? I received a email yesterday and it has the initial fee as almost $1,300

From what I was told, the 1 year expiration was set by the chief due to CCW licensing being very new. Unsure if he will change it to be on parity with the rest of the counties (2 year). But again...from what I was told - it wasn't done in response to any upcoming law or hindering people from getting CCWs. No indication that the renewal fee (only $25) will change in time.

The cost was $20 (initial application) and $80 (issuance) for a total of $100. You also need to pay $93 to the state. This price will be honored for all people who applied prior to the price increase that hit sometime in July.

The cost has since increased to $1300 (application and issuance) - their explanation was to cover the true cost of processing licenses from end to end. Of course this can be debated...I'll just leave it at that.

Wow, congrats! Can't believe SJPD is issuing faster than SCSO.

I'm in the 14th month of the SJPD CCW saga and it looks like I am in the home stretch with the psych and training requirements completed. The SJPD seems to have finally settled on a process and they are finally issuing permits on a slow but regular cadence.
I want to give a shout out Gun Kraft for their 16 hour training class. This was the 2nd CCW class I have taken from Gun Kraft. The first class for an Utah CCW class was so well organized and planned out the I sought them out for the 2nd session. I knew there weren't going to be any shortcuts and that we would be spending all 16 hours in class and on the range (I've heard rumors about other CCW offerings), but I was pretty certain that the time would go quickly, that the course would be well organized, provide great info, and that I would learn some new things and re-learn some old things. It's sick how well prepared Robin's classes are. He is organized to a "T", he has excellent training material for every student in the class, and his lectures are well honed and engaging. I had not spent any time on the range with Gun Kraft in the past but they did not disappoint. In addition to performing the requisite practical exam for the county, we learned and practiced drawing from a holster, a slow and controlled draw to a par timer, accuracy drills, speed drills, and so on. Robin was extremely patient with the students and moved things along a quite a good clip. I shot close to 300 rounds during the range session and all of it was meaningful practice with techniques that I could take home to continue on my own time.
When it's time to sign up for your training class, do yourself a favor and sign up with Gun Kraft

                    Got Mine SJPD

Was approved few 4 weeks ago and I have CCW in hand. Took about 8 months and re-apply twice because of new system. Seems prices have gone up tremendously. But glad to have it.

Hello friends... seems like this forum has gone quiet since Dec 2023... Can anyone share their experiences with the CCW process with SJPD in 2024? I am considering to apply. Thank you

Went through ASP Firearms Training and they are the best. Very efficient and classes are actually held in San Jose unlike other training schools.

You can see my timeline below. I just completed the 8 hour with ASP, the other r8 hour will be done via ZOOM from your computer (which is pretty neat). I would recommend ASP to anyone who wants friendly + knowledgeable people to train you. They're a great group.

Overall this process will likely take about 2 years for me:

                            1/19/23 - Application sent in

                            1/28/23 - Check cashed

4/24/23 - Paulo responded - just keep waiting til my app is called.

                            11/20/23 - Paulo emailed to re-apply online.

11/21/23 - submitted application online again

                            12/5/23 - in person interview

                            12/7/23 - livescan completed

7/21/24 - ofc Paulo out on leave. Ofc Manuel Ochoa taking over

                            9/16/24 - reference checks

                            10/17/24 - psych eval completed

10/17/24 - CCW Training email, registered with ASP for 11/16.

                            11/16/24 - ASP Training - Hands-on

                            11/23/24 - ASP Training - ZOOM Lecture
