    City of San Jose

Has anyone experienced any headway in their CCW application with the city of San Jose? I submitted my application in June and I am somewhere between 20th and 30th in line, but I haven't heard anything. My friend is in the 10-20 range and he hasn't received a call either.
I have been in contact with the permit office, mailed in a check (this is the only permit for which they won't take a credit card) as instructed. I have been calling the permit office every 3-4 weeks for status... I'm always told to expect to hear something "next month". The SJPD has had two officers working on this process, first was Jennifer Kurz and now it's Paulo Peredes. I am not exactly sure what these guys are doing. They are into their 9th month of accepting applications and, as far as I can tell, they haven't cleared one.
It's a total cluster over there.
    Respectfully,
    SIGarette

Just wondering, did you only apply through SJPD or did you also apply through Santa Clara County? I'm curious which one is faster, considering the county is backed up until mid-2024.

I applied with both. Same with my wife. I have my interview with the county at the end of this month and my wife?s has hers later this year. Wanted to see which one will be quicker for my wife. Hoping to have my license in 3-6 months?

Nice, that's good! I want to apply with SJPD but am concerned with their delays. I'd imagine there's quite a waitlist. SCC is just getting crazy all the way until next year.

Yeah, that's a good call. Thanks!

Heads up to anybody who is reading this thread, SJPD is NOT currently taking payments for the Initial Application fee ($20). I spoke with their Permits Unit and was instructed the initial application fee will be paid at time of interview.

Now, when those interviews will actually be scheduled... that's a different story. :P

I completed my interview a week ago and livescan. There is only 1 officer in charge of CCW applications at the moment.

Your permit # is provided after you apply. Mine is <20. I have buddies >20 but <30 that havent been contacted yet. The officer will send an email with interview dates.

SJPD only allows 2 firearms on your CCW and requires both DROS# and sales receipt. If you dont have it, they wont proceed (they dont care if you protest).

The officer in charge is out of office with no backup until Mar 22. He said process of approval after psych and training should be quick. Lastly SJPD app fee, and issue/renewal is much cheaper than SCC. $20+$80 for app and issue vs $70+$300 for scc. The only benefit of SCC is they allow 3 firearms (unsure if you need dros/receipt) and if you move out of SJ they can still renew as long as you stay in county.

Lastly, you pay the $20 app fee via check at interview.

I also have my SCC interview soon. Feel free to ask questions and Ill do my best to help as I go through this process.

How long will it be before someone sues a city like San Jose, or San Francisco, and other ultra liberal cities/counties that have responded to Bruen with foot dragging, purposeful understaffing, more ‘hoops’ like a psych eval, demanding sales receipts (for guns presumably already in CA DOJ databases) etc. that result in a year or longer delays? Its clear they are effectively implementing a ban on CCW permits administratively through their serpentine and drawn out processes and turning “good character” into a vastly more intrusive tour of your personal life than simply ensuring you are not a prohibited person. And what about the disincentive effect on people who would apply but simply don’t want to go through the lengthy delays and extensive poking around in their jobs, neighbors, social media, etc.? It’s all designed to minimize the number of people who apply, then minimize the number who stick it out through the tortuous process. I.e., the intended effect is an administratively imposed ban without calling it a ban when only a few lucky individuals make it through each year.

I just applied to the city because the Sheriff told me that they weren't taking applications from SJ residents (apparently, total BS). The city looked quite hopeful. The people at the permit office were responsive and friendly at the time (June 2022). This is a 360 from my previous try with the county about 10 years ago. They have been stonewalling ever since. Once I realized that the SJPD was just faffing around and that I could submit an application with the county, so much time had gone by that I was certain that the line at the Sheriff would be out of control.

I am between 20 and 30 and my buddy is <20. He has not been contacted. It sounds like he has to be close. I was assured by the officer that the process is first in, first out. Now that the ball is rolling, it should be soon.

Any idea how that works with PPT's of off-rosters? I wonder how basic the receipt can to be.

I believe your PPT receipt with the FFL will suffice as the "purchase" + DROS paperwork that went with it.

Just completed a 16 hour CCW class with my first San Jose student. It was a bit of a drive up to San Leandro for him but I'm glad he was able to attend.

Just completed the training for SJPD CCW with Robin at GunKraft. Robin did a really excellent job with the class and material. The class isn't your normal boring check the box class which I appreciated a lot. You can tell he doesn't do this class for the money and is something he is actually passionate about. He goes over a lot of important material in breathe in the class and helps you understand where improvement is needed in the future. Would 100% recommend.

Hopefully getting that CCW card soon here
