I am in the same boat you are. My appointment was April 16th of this year and it sounds like you and I applied around the same time. Just out of curiosity have you been in contact with any investigators from the sheriffs department or had anyone stop by for a residency check? I have not heard from anyone or had a residency check that I know of. As for scheduling the training I have heard so many different answers about doing the training now. I have checked into it and all the instructors seem to require an approval letter first before doing the training. Good luck with getting your approval letter.

I applied for my CCW about 14 months ago, my appointment with the Sheriff happened in early April this year, so now I’m in the 90 day background check waiting period and have roughly 20-30 days left.

Should I schedule my safety course now and try to complete it before I get confirmation that I passed the background check?

Do note that you can do your AZ permit on your own once you get your CA permit. There's no need to have to pay your trainer an additional fee (if that's the case)...unless you just want to because it's easier for you.

Are you certain about this? I took my training with Bill for my initial CCW and remembered having to bring and present letter of approval from the Sheriff. He needed the gun permit number from the letter to put on the training certificate .

That sounds like a really good plan. The only thing that could be an issue is I noticed a lot of these instructors will not allow you take the training with no approval letter. How do you get around that issue?

Yes/No. They have 90 days to approve or deny, but they get to 'hold' your formal application until such a time that they calculate that they can be done in 90 days.

The don't consider you having applied formally until you go in to review your paperwork/get livescan. It's a workaround to the 90 days, in effect.

I used him for my Utah/Arizona many years ago and used him again for California last year.

DGM seems to only let you schedule post-approval. Are all places like this? Would anyone recommend I try to do the course in advance, or am I "jumping the gun" by doing that?
