It's been suggested more than once. One draw back is that it might show too much approval of certain opinions that are not, uh, er, mmm, welcome.

"Is that a desert country?" "No; a fat country; fat people." "You are not fat?" "No. I'm different..."

I belong to another gun forum where we use a "thanks" icon for the original post only.

It could potentially clean up threads by eliminating these unneeded posts and would make future reading of threads easier. Anyone else like to see this added?

I would give that idea a "like", but I can't without quoting.
And that just clutters the thread.
            Doesn't it?

And the rating (which I had missed until now)?
It only lets me rate the thread.
            Not someone's post.
            Or did I miss something?

I can just see it now, how many likes can we fit into a single "FP basement" thread?

Really though, you do have to ask yourself, at what point does a "like" mean absolutely nothing at all?

I really like the system at city-data where you get recs on your posts, not everyone sees what posts get reced besides the poster of the reced post. Then you have a points type thing next to your name with how many recs your posts received.

I think it can be useful but a facebook like button is lame. Heres an example of a forum I was browsing looking for reviews on audio.

Are you looking for a subwoofer that will add rumble to your system but don't know which one to get or the difference between sealed and ported designs? We discuss all of your bass concerns to help you become a true bassaholic.

About the same time that "^^+1" starts meaning nothing.

Why don't you just use the facebook like or share buttons and be happy with that?

The like button would also bump comments, see reddit and imgur.
