I've been looking in to it and the biggest concern I would have is server load, I think there are ways to get around that however.
I am curious as to what kind of chat module you would be interested in, a seperate chat page or an embedded chat portion in the forum itself?

I was thinking of a separate link on the forum top that took one to a chat room page that showed who was in there and then you could enter and chat. We probably want support for more than one room (so we can send the political debates somewhere else if needed) but I'd want to try it with a single room at first.

And also maybe the ability to have private chats (so we don't have to fill up our PM box). Something that was platform-independant would be good (i.e. doesn't require I.E. or Windows).Comment

Okay gentlemen, you asked for it and now you have it!
Right now it is a basic chatbox with little in the way of features, I want to see what if anything this does to the server and as importantly if there is really a big interest in it.
If it turns out to be a big hit and people really want to expand it I've already started the ground work for an embedded IRC client down the road.
