Seems like if there was a two step verification process when joining that might stem the tide of some of the spam.

Not allowing free email accounts to join.

    Moderating the first 10-20 posts.

All things I have seen on other forums, some may be implemented here already but since I joined a long time ago I am not sure.

Is CAPTCHA not compatible with this vBulletin version?

Sounds like Calguns version of vBulletin is weaksauce when it comes to fighting Spammers. Maybe if they tried implementing a bunch of pre-Registration questions as recommended in the link below, it might help?

It might be worth the pain of upgrading

Yes. All it takes is a VPN account to get around that. And then you do what? Ban that VPN address and cut off legit customers?

Imposing a wait before posting might help keep out the more ADHD spammers. And then admins could have a look at all of the NEW accounts created.

You can also put in the rules in the FINE print that you MUST select an avatar. A Human bent on making an account and home here would want to do that. A spammer just wants that account made and maybe would ignore that step.

It might be worth it to state in the rules that there is a need for an avatar and see how many spammers pick one. Then you simply delete all of the accounts that get made once or twice a week that have no avatars.

Better yet, make folks supply their OWN avatar...

Not sure what tools are available at the admin level, but can't some features, like inserting links, be disabled?

Granted, they could type it out without the HTML tags, but it would be some deterrent.

Posting spam without a URL link is pointless.

Users could still be able to respond and post, just no links until they've proven themselves worthy.

I'm saying that Calguns needs to require non free email addresses to register.
