    Got an email tonight...

Not sure where to post this. Two different I.P. addresses tried logging in to my Calguns account unsuccessfully. After 5 attempts they were locked out for 15 minutes and gave up. I found out about it because I got an automatic email from Calguns. All is good as they weren't able to hack my account, but I thought I should make you aware of it.

That's really strange. I got an e-mail this morning from a solar energy forum that I haven't logged into in years. Telling me that someone tried to log in to my account five times and failed. They gave the IP address and I looked it up, somewhere in France.

What the hell, some kind of new phishing scam? I've never had this happen before.

No so strange; it happens all the time. As long as you have a strong password on your account (you can check your password strength here:
http://www.passwordmeter.com/ ) you should be fine. If the account allows it, set up a two factor verification system, where they send a code to your phone in addition to you having to have a password, and a 'wrong password lockout' is recommended also.

Ok thanks. I didn't know that. I've never gotten an e-mail like that before, and then I see this thread the very same morning. I thought there was a mass cyber attack in progress.

Sometimes I try to log in and when I figure out that there is already that name in use, I might try it to see if it was an old account.

I was PISSED that ebay refused to give me the account of some jackass that named himself "stilly" and then had not even logged on in 6 years. I begged and pleaded for them to give me the account but they refused. So I had to stick with a different name.

But other times when I see that my name was taken in other places, I tried to log in. Then I might have even sent a pw/reset to the e-mail associated with the account. Yeah anyways...

I was getting weird spam as well. Also notifications of someone trying to sign into my Google account.

Its a common thing. Lots of people use the same username and password for all accounts including financial accounts. Hackers take advantage of this and try to hack you forum/email accounts hoping it will be the same for your bank. Thats why its important to have difficult passwords and do not repeat them when using important accounts.
