My best guess is the hosting provider has bandwidth limits on the site. Once we hit those, they take the site down for a number of hours. This is what happens when you use cut rate hosting providers. Why use a cut rate provider? Can't afford a good one that supports the sites actual needs. This is a consequence of providing an incredibly valuable service that doesn't actually generate income.👎 1Comment

Funny, but AOL Dial Up is not a hosting provider. That's an internet provider. Different animal entirely. Back in the AOL days there were sites like GoeCities that would offer you a tiny amount of space on their server for a website. They made money by posting banner ads on your web page you could not remove. The other catch was that if you got more than a couple hundred visitors a day, they shut off your hosting service off for the remainder of the day. Then around midnight it came back online again. Until you got too many hits and they cut you off again. The vicious cycle repeated over and over. AOL offered their own hosting service back in the day, but I do not remember if they did this or not.
The behavior we are seeing with this site reminds me of that practice. Especially since it happens around peak hours when people are just getting off work. I would not be surprised if this site is being hosted on a plan that cuts it off once it reaches a certain bandwidth threshold.
Yes, I am that old. But in my defense, I was in the military, then college, back then.Last edited by tacticalcity; 09-17-2025, 2:45 PM.Comment

Okey Dokey, but "AOL dial up" was funny, as this is what most of us remember of the olden times of the early www. days.

Still can hear the dial up tones in my head.

this is just one of many issues. TacticalCity also has another good insight. There’s a lot of little things that needs to be rearchitected in general.

If some level of government had that information, what would they do with it? How would having that info benefit public safety? How would it benefit law enforcement?Comment

I have some log files to go through. I’ve not had spare time recently to devote as work has kept me very busy the last few months.
I’m hoping to have some downtime this next few weeks to look into this further.NRA Life Member and Certified Instructor: Pistol - Rifle - Shotgun - PPITH - PPOTH - NRA Certified RSO
