I hear you and it’s Kes’ site so he can do as he pleases . . . But my vote would still be a paid membership. My thinking is it keeps bots at bay (for the most part) and provides a revenue stream outside of advertising. Hell most of us spend between $9.99 - $15.99 per month on streaming platforms. I would pay $4.99 or so a month “IF” it would make a difference.

I’ve always (past 13 or so years here) felt the Marketplace should be a pay to play forum. Keep the riff raft out. Lol

Carry on . . . Wishing you the best Kes

These are not hard problems to fix, just pay someone to do it and move on.

This has been going on for years now. I never get a response, even when I offered to help for free years ago. I don't see the point in keeping it going when every other website on the damn internet works and calguns doesn't.

It’s a common problem these days for all sites with AI scraping everything, you have to know how to defend against it. If you want to prove it, open up any AI interface and ask it a question about some known Calguns posts. davidj I don't have a reason to spend money on keeping the site the way its been since last year. It's hard enough to operate a site, when you have so many people who want you to fail.

I focus on adding features and growth. It wouldn't be worth what limited resources i have. I have new features on the way, no point in wasting money to keep a site down, there are plenty of people who said they can fix it other than me. When it was on cloud, there was no problem, but same issue which was why the bandwidth charges ran up.

If you think its my grand plan, then I'm flattered by the thought.

If you honestly read that post, he's got more to put back together than just this site.

Personally, I'm not sure how much more patience I'm gonna have; but, I'm willing to exercise a bit more.
I'm with you Trapped about continuing to be a bit more patient, but I do worry about Kes. He is going through something that really has no set timeline to heal. Grief and healing has no defined timeline for sure. I wish him and his family the best of course.

The site works(ish) for me as is. Slow and difficult to log in at times, but it does work. Let's just hope it does not fade into oblivion.

Um, the gerbil I was referring to is in Sacramento. I think people refer to you as a raccoon.

I didn’t think you were. You asked about the guests issue, we have them too. Just clarifying what they actually are.

If it were me... and I'd invested years in a site that now has both the history and issues of CalGuns and there were people willing to take it on (buy it?) that had far more technical capabilities than I, I would try to negotiate a transfer. Terms would be along the lines of:
                        - Purchaser agrees to keep the current mods/admins and administration policies for at least 2(?) years
                        - Purchaser agrees to get the site running properly (would have to be defined) within 2 months
                        - Purchaser agrees to keep the site running and not merge it with another site for at least 5 years
                        - Breach of any term reverts all ownership and rights back to the seller

I'd be concerned about preserving the legacy and years of historical information and getting the site fully operational for the foreseeable future.

As a non-technical person, would it be easier to take Calguns to a different platform if the history did not need to be transferred?
I mean the history is good and all, but not at the expense of moving forward.

Could all the users and say the last 1year of posts be transferred to a new platform? I know we all don’t like the Raccoon, but whatever platform they are using, seems stable and fairly easy to navigate. Same for nearly all the other forums I’m on from Cars to Watches.

(Again, not promoting the other site, just a genuine question about forum migration)

Removing all post history would possibly address the issue, more likely all data altogether would need to be removed for a quick fix (including user data). Having migrated several forums I only kept user data once and never post data. The technical challenges are significant even with a team of engineers. There is a solve for post data, it can be archived and displayed as web pages. Still visible, just can’t be interacted with. This has been proposed a number of times, but a section of the remaining users have serious objections to it and with the damage that has already been done to the user base the question becomes would losing those users be the straw that finally kills the site. I don’t see any easy solutions at this point.
