Yeah, when it starts stating "WORKING" with or without the banner, chances are good a 504 gateway error if forthcoming. Time of day and/or number of members/guests make no difference. It's hit or miss for me be it 0300 hrs (my usual time to visit) or 1100 hrs.

Isn't that an old blues song? "If 504 Gateway Timeouts were Nickels....."

Gateway timeouts constantly. This site only works like now very early in the morning. Otherwise continous timeouts. I do not even bother. I think it is time to move on to the other site.

I’m not interested in the other site, nothing there is beneficial to me.

It has been awhile since any word has been put out regarding the problems or potential fixes, an update would be appreciated even if there is nothing good to report. We are at the point where many are thinking Calguns is nearing its end, I certainly hope not. But whatever is going on, looking to sell hope not. Or still plugging away at it, a little heads up for the membership would be a good thing.

Very frustrating. Been trying to get on here throughout the day with constant timeouts. I’m not going to that other site either. Just want our calguns to work correctly.

Except there is nothing left here. Any bookmarks I had saved as links to older threads/posts that were beneficial will not link to those assets anymore. I just get this message: "Invalid Page URL. If this is an error and the page should exist, please contact the system administrator and tell them how you got this message." While that may make sense considering the server change, searching for those same threads since the server change yields nothing, not even by way of a Google/DuckDuckGo or Startpage search.

And other users are leaving in droves. They've given up. Many of the most well known names on Calguns for the past 20 years are showing up at caguns.net on a daily basis
with most noting they have given up on Calguns because they can't even log in here for several days at a time, if at all. This is the first time I've been able to log in since 10/12/2024 after trying several times over the past several days, at different times, only ever getting 504 Gateway Timeouts. It's bad. Real bad.

I don't see any updates on legislation or litigation being made here of any kind. Certainly nothing meaningful. There's no intent, not even half-hearted attempts being made here, focused toward collaboration and collectivism or organizing and assembly for action on 2nd Amendment causes anymore. Sham/spam posts stay up for days at a time, untouched. Many important topic based forums haven't had new posts within in months, some no new posts in years.

The only forums/threads getting traffic of any measure seem to be those citing the Calguns problems here and in the Announcements forum (which ironically has a serious deficit of announcements) and the 'Off Topic' forum which I could do without entirely, even when Calguns did work right. Certainly nothing beneficial there because much of it was pulled from sources like TMZ, Huffington Post, CNN, or Yahoo.

So with all of that lacking, and the older important reference posts gone, the search feature is screwed, it often takes large spans of time and re-tries to post a simple single post (even worse if with a photo) and few (if any) new relevant posts are being made because so few users can log in, just what is the 'beneficial' part?

                  Hope as a virtue?

For that matter, something is seriously wrong when you see this at 1:25AM on a Saturday early morning:

There are currently 6642 users online. 82 members and 6560 guests.

Can whoever is responsible for the site just give up and let someone else manage it? I'm sure people would even pay a few bucks to have a working site.

The number of guests it’s showing is concerning. Not sure why it can’t just be shut down for members if the traffic is causing slow downs. From what I thought other Members have joined in to help but the end result is the same that they complained about. Site is not reliable and again NO UPDATES. A daily update would literally take seconds.

That's my thoughts on it so far. I would prefer having Calguns.net resemble its former glory, even if an 80% shadow of it.

But it looks like eventually that there won't be a Calguns.net and Caguns.net would be the feasible alternative that may grow to be what Calguns.net once was if enough people from here go there.

I seriously doubt that place will ever reach the standards, knowledge and fun Calguns was and is. They all seem very young and inexperienced there, this place went through it all, the changes and what it was like in better times and know what it’s like to have a resemblance of 2a freedom. I see very little of that there and it’s boring as hell, they seem to have a no fun agenda.

I don't need California specific gun info any more, but I still enjoy Calguns for the knowledge, wit and fun. Been hanging out here for almost 15 years, got history here and no reason to join that other place. If Calguns goes the way of the Dinosaur, I’ll be done with California gun forums.

I don't think they're "all" younger members; but, they do seem to feel that those of us remaining active here are predominantly old fogeys who don't know anything about the Internet, aren't interested in change, and are, for lack of a better phrase, stuck in the mud.

In a sense, I think you're correct. Many of us are, in fact, old enough to remember different times and, therefore, have a differing perspective on what was and could be based on actual life experiences. It's a 'sad' commentary that we are losing that perspective as we inevitably 'age out.'

Insofar as 'fun stuff,' much of that is located in OT and there are many on that site which feel OT is unnecessary and simply a mess here. While there is some validity in the thought process and, certainly, the expressed views regarding the challenges of moderating OT are grounded in reality, there's also a lot of misperception about it. (The guy who owns/runs that site, evidently, didn't even know that OT has been 'members only' for a LONG time, since well before I joined, and has missed the myriad threads talking about how Government people would join just to access OT since most of the 'political' discourse is conducted there.) While I do agree that there is a good deal of nonsense, it's also up to individuals to 'filter' their own experience by simply not reading or joining in threads they feel to be 'inappropriate' in much the same way one is expected to 'change the channel' on television if they don't like the programming. Once that is borne in mind, moderation becomes a case of dealing with the inappropriate; but, that is where their difficulty lies in the sense that what is considered 'inappropriate' on that site has become, in many respects, the 'norm' here.

As I've said, there are individuals and groups among the membership which feel a 'new direction' for the site is needed and, as a result, if they were to 'take over' or hold sway, the experience would be a radically different one. It's part of why comparing the two sites, despite the carbon copying of the layout, is misguided. Calguns is far from a 'free for all.' However, as you note, it has 'evolved' into what the site has become. The other site has some 'growing' to do and will 'evolve' into something different. How much different? But, like you, I'm personally not interested in... different... or, at least, the difference(s) I see there and on most other California-specific sites.
