Walk up to the counter like you're looking at a gun, but near a salesman who's helping a customer (looking at a gun, filling out paperwork, whatever). Make sure it's near enough for it not to be weird that you're listening in on their conversation. At the right moment, jump in on the discussion, preferably in support of something the salesman says. Now you've made contact, just keep hovering nearby and being involved in their discussion, and when he's done with this guy he'll come to you next. Works every time for me.
