What is the purpose of different ring heights?

lol. Guess it was a stupid question.

    Let me ask more specifically.

I just picked up a Savage MKII FV-SR. It appears most people use rings mounts for their FV-SRs. Assuming I go that route and wanted to pick up the Primary Arms 4-16X44 and maybe the 1-4X. The ring mount options for these two PA Scopes is a medium or high 6 screw.

What ring mount should I get for those two scopes for the FV-SR?

And would those mounts work with my AR or would I need different size ring mounts?

That depends on you and cheek placement. Med-High most likely. Also if you have back irons or not.
