It is an innovative material, Titanium Damascus or Timascus, also known as Moku-Ti or Ti-Moku, was invented and created by a group of talented friends Tom Ferry, Bill Cottrell, and Chuck Bybee.
Bybee first came up with an idea for a Titanium Damascus and talked to Tom Ferry about his ideas for using it on different knives and in a variety of environments, but the discussion was always met with skepticism.
It was thought that this material could not be produced under limited conditions.
Ferry decided to give it a try. After several failures, Ferry succeeded unexpectedly. He shared his initial results with Bill Cottrell, and after weeks of research, they developed a new material that was quickly patented in the US (patent number:6,857,558, issued on February 22, 2005.) Repeated experiments and innovative improvements have led to a more favorable development of titanium shuts.
Similar to Damascus steel, which is forged of two or more kinds of steels, titanium shuts itself and consists of two or more titanium alloys (usually the current CP and 6AL4V).Timascus is corrosion resistant, non-magnetic and light in texture, with the beautiful pattern and appearance of Damascus steel without the disadvantages of steel. It is made by placing different titanium alloys in metal boxes, filling them with inert gas and applying heat and pressure so that the two alloys are forged and laminated together.
Currently Titanium Damascus shading processing usually uses heating to achieve color change rather than anodizing, and all current safe shading techniques can be applied to Timascus. In the future, different alloy steels will have different colors. (Because titanium has no carbide, the steel is now used for cutting tools and furniture decoration.)
With the exception of milling, Timascus is manufactured using essentially the same process as any other titanium alloy. Different titanium differ in hardness. When cutting, different hardness will lead to the wear of the cutter, but the use of fillet cutting machine, more conducive to processing.
Timascus is a beautiful fusion of technology and modern silicon metal.
At present, the processing method of this kind of steel is not easy, and only 1-3 companies in the United States have a complete processing technology. Because the processing method is not easy to different prices are also quite high.
Only the 6.25*4.25*0.167 inch titanium shuts materials on the market cost more than $600.
