Our level III armor is capable of defeating the rounds mentioned above, including 55gr, but all level III armor has a velocity limit of 2,800 feet per a second. Any round traveling faster than that does have a chance to penetrate. We do overbuild our armor, but when you are pushing 3,000 fps in any round/caliber/bullet type you run the risk of penetration.

For higher level threats we also offer level III+ which is respectively rated for threats up to 3,100 feet per second, and level IV, which is designed specially to defeat 30.06 M2AP (armor piercing) and lesser rifle threats.

      We hope this helps clarify.

Thanks for the reply, I searched around a little, it looks like a 55 gr rd drops down to 2800 fps after 200 yrds or so?
My next purchase will be III+ for sure from you guys.

On our level III we typically maintain performance around 2,950fps, but rate it to 2,800 officially for the level III rating; we error on the side of caution with all of our armor.

Thanks again for the reply, how much more thickness and weight would it take to make a ar500 steel level 4 plate?

To clarify, I believe that was 5.56 in both 62g and 55g. I wouldn't have expected the plate to stop any rifle bullet at that short distance. Also shows how much of a joke the armor piercing ban attempt was.
