They refused to transfer a 59/66 SKS with the GL removed and replaced with a flash hider for us today. This was one that J&G was selling a few months back.
The first reasoning was "it has a bayonet lug, and that is an evil feature."
The sales lady said, "See, none of our guns have bayonet lugs." After I pointed out that there was an AR behind the counter with a bayonet lug, I was told "Oh, well that one is featureless."
"Well, except for the bayonet lug you just mentioned? You do know that was removed from the evil feature list somewhere around 2004, right?"
"Yeah, it's a California thing. You know how bad this state is. Hold on, let me ask the other sales guy."
We waited about 5 minutes while he was on the range and he came back and said, "We can't transfer that because it has a flash hider."
"Right, but it is a fixed magazine."
"It is classified as an assault weapon."
"Ok, I'm really, really confused. Is it because it has a bayonet lug, or a flash hider, or both?"
"It's because it is an SKS. We are sorry, it's not us, it's California."
"No, no it's not a "California thing". California states that the flash hider is legal if it does not have a detachable magazine. It is a perfectly legal firearm with a fixed magazine and a flash hider."
OK, well........I guess I can knock another sales place off the list? I totally understand the confusion on the new laws, but this is not a new law. What the heck?
