In June my son went to a week long Cub Scout day camp that had pellet gun shooting. After watching him while she volunteered, my wife green lighted me taking him to the range. We had both agreed that there was no age limit per se. When he showed he was willing and able to pay attention and focus, we'd give it a go. He just turned 7 in June and as school was winding up I didn't think it would happen this year, but his maturity growth this summer has been amazing.
In July I purchased him a little Cricket .22. Perfect size for him. Good length. Light weight. Good safety features. He's been working with me on guns in the garage for over a year, so he was used to safe handling, checking chambers, etc. Now we had something that actually fit him.
Today we went to the range for the first time. We set up at the table and shot the 15 yard line for a couple of hours. It was such a treat working with him on his technique and watching him correct his point of aim to get himself into the black. They were shooting a NRA rifle class right next to us and the shooting didn't cause him the slightest concern. On our left, the pistol guys were cracking away with .45's and some big bore stuff.
I'm real proud of my little guy and he was so excited after wards. He wants to go back and tackle the steel hanging plates at 25 yards next time.

His 15 yard target:

We had 6 shots below the paper and 3 to the right. After that start and his own adjustments, he was on paper for everything else.
I've got a new range partner.
