    North Cow Mountin

went shooting today at north cow mountain in ukiah. I didn't realize that the road up there wasn't meant for honda civics, but made it in and out no problem, next time it would be nice to have a truck. I wanted to take pictures but forgot my camera. The range is set on a ridge in a sort of a valley On the BLM web site it says that its 400 yrds but I don't think its that much but it looks like it is on goggle maps. It was a nice place to shoot with many targets already set up, most of which the BLM says are illegal metal and such. But it wasn't flat it was on a gradual slop up. on goggle maps paste this, 39.132424, -123.102171. thats about where the benches are and this I think is the furthest targets 39.134692, -123.098137.

I still haven't been up to Cow Mountain. I go up to Lake Pillsbury if I'm going to go up that way. Do you guys ever get hassled by rangers or anything like that? I've heard the rangers get a little nosy up there.

LOL. I drove my Del Sol up to Cow Mountain.

+1 on it not being a road for a Honda Civic chassis.

It's really a shame about all the trash there. Maybe it's been cleaned up a bit since I was there (two years ago). Most Calgunners seem responsible and not the type to leave a place trashed. However, there are a fair number of yahoos who probably don't share the same respect for a public space. It's people like that that help give all shooters a bad name and may contribute to getting one of the few legal public shooting areas shut down.

If I went to Cow Mountain again I'd go with a friend (I went alone last time). I didn't have a bad experience or anything. But, it is pretty remote and I could see it as the type of place you could get jacked if the wrong people were there.

Also, it's nice to have a place where one can rapid fire and not deal with a public range Nazi. However, the flipside is you might have to deal with people who really don't know how to safely handle their firearms. Might also have to deal with people drinking and shooting/etc.

I haven't seen any of that (only been the one time). But it's the kind of place all that could go down.

I'd recommend anyone who'd drive to Cow Mountain consider joining the Ukiah Gun Club. It's a beautiful facility with friendly members. Oftentimes I've had the place to myself. No range Nazis. No yahoos.

I didn't have any trouble with the rangers, I called them to get directions and they were pretty nice. There was a couple of tvs a washer, microwave, etc. No one cleans up their brass or shot hulls so its hard to pic up after yourself but I tried to pick up as many as I could find. I think that some people leave their paper targets so that other people can use them because none of the people there brought any of their own. I brought a friend for the same reason but the only people there was a couple and a family so it wasn't bad but I could definitely see people heading up there to drink some beer and shoot some s***. It was fun to finally be able to rapid fire and find out how hard it is to stay on target.

+1 It's people like that that help give all shooters a bad name and may contribute to getting one of the few legal public shooting areas shut down.

I hate people who do stuff like this and then us respectable people get shut down.

All posts in this thread are fictional

Dear fellow readers, this whole thread is totally made-up, just like when calgunners start talking about zombies. It's a fantasy, Cow Mt doesn't really exist, don't waste your time trying to find it, no such thing.

Last time I was there, 2 Albanians and 2 Mexicans rolled up in a f'in monster truck, busted out a couple glocks and a couple 12-packs of coronas, drank the beer and used the bottles as targets. And they shot the glocks w/ two hands - right hand holding the grip, left index finger wiggling back and forth against the trigger as fast as possible. Needless to say I kept an eye on them and a romy-g loaded and at the ready.
I hate people that are full of hate.

that place is the wild west. tried hunting there a few times but after i came across multiple groups blindly firing into the brushy canyons (where i was hunting) from the ridges and then there was the pot garden I found, haven't been back

Warning - Cow Mountain is in another dimension - you may not return - do not attempt to cross over into it!

BTW - if you do crossover, take some garbage bags and tote a load or two down the mountain. Thanks!

I might be heading up there soon; from the lakeport side.
Just about done outfitting the 4runner for some off road fun. I've got a bud that lives in lakeport. I figured we'd load up the gun's early and head out using maps and gps to find it.
We'll be sure to bring some bags and haul some trash out.

Hey all, I'm planning a trip up there saturday the 20th witha couple friends and I'd like to know if anyone can say what weather might be like this time of year on the mountain?

Never been to Cow mountain, when I have spare time to go shooting, I always trek to Pillsbury or go to the range at Boggs Mtn, but I only have a day this time, not the weekend I usually have.

Most of the time I drive in a big ford van that doesn't do so well on mtn roads but always manages to get me to pillsbury or boggs. If there is going to be snow though I'll need to procure alternate transport.

Will bring some trash bags too, I didn't think it would be as messy as in the pic posted.

                            cow mountain range

i usually have the place to myself, unless it's a weekend. most shooters there are safe and friendly folks, but one time the group next to me took a break from shooting to partake of the local herb, figured it was a good time to pack up and leave...the road up IS kinda steep but well graded. have fun!

I really enjoy shooting at CM, when I have the place to myself.
                              +1 on packing trash out
+1 on being at the ready with shooters that are drinking. When I see alcohol, I will either back off the line and take a break or leave.
My roommate and I used to shoot up there all the time. We would bring an ez-up, a space heater, a cooler full of food, and some pieces of carpet to lay on the tables. We'd pick days that had the worst weather, I mean cats and dogs raining. It would be completely empty there. Awesome. Even if it was pouring down, we had heat and a dry place to shoot from.
