    1500 yards shooting in SoCal

Barstow seems to be the promised (BLM) land. Is it possible to go out to 1500 yards and beyond? I looked at the BLM map and there's plenty of land open to shooting north of Barstow, but is it accessible? I have a pickup, but it's not 4WD.

Apparently no one has ever shot at over 1000 yards around Barstow.

What about Twentynine Palms? There is a lot of BLM land east of it. Does anyone have any experience with long range shooting around there? Or maybe Palm Springs?

Have you gotten out and looked for one? Even when i was out in Arizona, it took us a while to find a spot to shoot 1300 yards without crossing over an atv trail or something. Just be safe and take your time to find the right spot. I'm not from around there but good luck.

I've never been out there. It's over 2 hours of driving, one way, and before I do it I was just wondering if it's worth going.

Correction: No body is going to post inpublic wher they shoot 1500 yards near Barstow for fear of their area getting over run with A holes who trash up the place. So yes, there are places to shoot a mile inthe Barstow area.

Yeah, what I found is BLM shooting areas are like secret fishing spots. You keep them to yourself and share only with close irl friends.

That is just how it is.

I am still trying to find this Corona BLM shooting area that few Calgun members told me about at the last meet up. Darn shooters are good at keeping the secret cause I normally can find what I look for on the internet.

I did stumble upon a few threads where people mentioned this place was a fairytale or actually mistaken for a legal place to shoot, but the Calgun members said that there was a sign that said it was a shooting area and to clean up after yourself.

Except that I never asked that.

That's all I was asking. Thanks.

I went out to 29 Palms today to check it out. The 29 Palms Rifle club is a great place, but currently their rifle range goes out only to 400 yards. They used to have targets at 1000 yards, but the county took them down because of some power lines. They hope to resolve the issue.

I went east of 29 Palms on the 62. Plenty of BLM land there. The base of the mountains south of the 62 is the ideal backdrop, but you need to get close to them. I went down some roads towards the mountains but I was afraid I'll get stuck in the sand, so I didn't push. Only when I got home I saw on the map that there is another dirt road going to some old mines, and it seems to be a somewhat bigger road. I guess I'll have to go out there again to check it out.

There are areas NE of Barstow that would be suitable for that range.

I spent 3 weeks in a geology field camp in the area with 2wd 15 passenger Ford van.

Carry a long handle shovel, tire pressure gauge, portable air compressor, couple strips of carpet in case you get stuck in the sand. Extra food, water and sleeping bag in case you have to spend the night. Let someone know where you are going.

Google Earth is your friend in doing some recon.
