    1N09 Range Question

    Hello,

I'm curious to see if any calgunners know what is going on with 1N09 shooting sight off the 330. The website always lists it as "closed". Over the past 4 months or so, different rangers at the station have told me different things- some have said it is open to foot traffic and shooting but no cars due to the road, one has said it isn't open period and warned of a citation or arrest if caught even hiking in there (really?), and another said it is only closed to shooting because of the fire levels not being accurately reported.

Is anyone still going down (or knows "a friend" who is)? Which ranger do you trust because it seems like each has a different answer thus an agenda?

Closure on1N09 has been an on going problem for years now. First, they say it is due to fire danger. Then it is due to road conditions. Then it is because they have crews up there fixing the water crossings. Then its "the road is open but the gates are locked."

My conclusion is that the Chief Ranger does not like off roaders or shooters and will do anything to keep us out. They claim budget cuts, but still seem to have the same number of permanent "workers." Yes, San Bernardino National Forest management is failing to do what the taxpayers put them there to do, and that is to manage the forest for multiple uses.

The shooting area off 38 above Barton Flats (can't remember that Forest Road number) was open as of a few weeks ago...4 wheel drive was needed to make it up the last hill, or you could walk up that last quarter of a mile. By 9 am, most of the shooting spots were full, so get there early.

Ok, so it is as I've gathered from talking to them- environmental agenda under the "conservationist" lingo.

Do you know what their legal reach is if they "catch" you down there? I've heard warning-tickets-fines-confiscation- the one ranger even said arrests??? Seems outrageous.

If it's a designated closed/no shooting area - watch your rear end - I'd say they COULD prosecute you to the fullest extent. It's not worth it. Just find another place.

What are you looking to shoot? Where in the IE are you?

It's fire season, and it's been a dry year. Here's the latest fire restrictions for the SBNF.

Gunit- That is what I figure but just wish there was some equity in the rangers' responses. I'm up by Calstate in San Berdoo. I'm this close to joining a private club because all the ranges are so horribly run. Any thoughts or other good free places?

No thoughts on free places, but I'm a member of and shoot at Lake Arrowhead Fish/Game. It's worth every penny. Good people. A good range. No problem folks there, either.

It's a short drive up from where you are.
