Your gripe is justified - ASC should strive for better customer service.

However I've done a PPT there and had no trouble. They also told me "you'll have to wait..." but then did the paperwork 5 minutes later. It was no trouble.

I also recommend Gussler's, however I've had to wait 45 minutes there because it gets busy around lunch time.

I think it is a somewhat reasonable attitude. They'll do it, but customers take priority. Better than not being willing to do it at all, or charging illegal fees.

Gun shops are funny like that. You don't hear employees at Sears saying, "well Sears makes next to nothing selling game consoles and DVDs because of the very thin margins, so you're going to have to wait at the back of the line".

Part of customer service is setting customer expectations, which is all they were doing. It could have been communicated better, but at least he didn't mince words

I'm sorry to hear you're upset, but the fact is, what he said is true. He should have communicated it better, but they have a range and other customers, and PPT is the lowest priority because it is the lowest profit/time ratio. I'm sorry, but it's a fact of doing business. That said, I will make a point to do any PPT you bring in quickly and efficiently, and I have said that here before. Look for the guy with "the hair."

As a side note: I know it's no excuse, but Wed-Fri this week ASC was shortstaffed with THREE guys (of a 7 person crew) out sick. I know, because I'm still recovering.

This state requires you to do a legal transfer; these gun stores complain about doing the transfer; just about any FREE state allows PPT to be done without ANY govt intervention.

So, the other customers are going to walk out because they are taking care of someone who was there first!!!

I've done a few xfers at ASC and when calling, they said the same thing. But it's said in a pleasant, matter-of-fact manner. I think they are just being honest and informing people they might have to wait. I never waited more than a few minutes.

However it seems he missed the first and most important point of being in business. Getting customers into your store should be your priority.
you should make it a point to remind them of that. Tell them your shooting club isn't going to be shooting at their range for the next month because their customer service is poorly lacking......it doesn't have to be true to get the message accross.

but hey, at least he did tell you the truth......

see, THAT'S good customer service........good for you for making things right! there's got to be a different way of saying how low priority PPT's are so that people don't get offended anymore. Hope you're feeling better

you should see that place on the weekend. I dont think that one guy or a handful of guys saying that will effect their business.

I was set to meet a calgunner yesterday for a PPT at American Shooting Center in SD. I decided to call and ask what the fee was, I know its $35 but some places try to get away with charging more. Heres how he responded:

"Its $35, but to be honest its a very low priority as we don't make a dime on PPT. We have a range here and were busy so if theres anyone else needing help the PPT's have to wait and go after them. But we can do it, its just not a priority"

Now. I respect his honesty and I know that this is the feeling of all FFL's in regards to PPT. However it seems he missed the first and most important point of being in business. Getting customers into your store should be your priority.

I usually go to ASC to shoot, ive rented guns and i've bought things from them before. However I didnt like the thought of sitting around while they continually help whoever walks in the door instead of finishing our PPT so I wen't to royal loan. (Who is awesome by the way)

Basically, I understand where they are coming from but to flat out tell people over the phone that the service they are inquiring about is a low priority opposed to the people spending more money than them just drives away customers. The reason I wanted to use ASC is because I was going to use their range when I went to pick up my gun. Now I will pick it up elsewhere and shoot it elsewhere. Maybe I would have used the range when I did my PPT, or bought ammo, or even bought another gun that I just couldnt pass up. Guess they'll never know.

                              Cliff Notes:
If your in SD use Royal Loan for your gun buying and PPT's. Or gussler's.
there is only one clerk who says this all the time, but all the other employee in ASC are good people i know who said that, thats exactly what he said to me for ppt with another calguner , we went to turners to do it
