    Chabot Range question

"SKS rifles are limited to only 2 rounds in the firearm at a time."

What's the reasoning behind this? Are people worried about slam firing?
''I want to make it clear,'' [Carl Rowan] said the other day as he emerged from his arraignment [for illegal possession and use of a firearm in Washington DC], ''that I still favor a strict national law to control the availability of handguns to those who are not law enforcement officials.''

So I take it they don't allow AKs, either, since nobody is going to use one with just two rounds in the mag.

Do AKs have a tendency to slam fire as well?

EDIT: Looked it up and it seems some AKs have free floating firing pins while others do not. Anyone know if Romy Gs have free floating firing pins?

I believe Romy-G's do, but if slam firing is such an issue, then they won't allow the M14 types, either. Hell, Springfield Armory even includes a "slamfire" article in their M1As.

The slam fire issue is because most SKS rifles come full of cosmoline. Including inside the bolt where the firing pin resides. Failure to properly clean the inside of the bolt can allow the FP to become embedded in the near solid cosmoline, with the FP protruding. Then when the bolt is released it can slam fire. Whether the bolt is released manually, or when the action cycles as the result of firing the first round.

Quite a few years ago a shooter lost control of his SKS at the Sac Valley range when this happened with a full magazine. He was not prepared for it go "full auto" on him and lost his grip, and at some point it then got pointed at his head, with the expected results. The investigating LE agency report stated the FP was stuck in cosmoline.

That was in the early 90s when Sac Valley was fairly new. It was one of the better documented cases of this happening and I believe it's why some ranges have the 2 round rule.

Also there were some sear QC probems with some makes of SKS's as well that resulted in 'run aways'

I've called to confirm that. They said you're allowed to shoot them so long as they're CA-compliant.

Mag restrictions are only for the SKS's
