Does a decent BLM map exist?

I'm starting to think it doesn't. I'm just looking or a simple map that shows where it is legal to shoot. Everything I've found while scouring the internet has been vauge at best, and mostly downright confusing. Ideally I'd like something with major roads, and landmarks that I can follow to get there. I've found a lot of stuff that's got blotches of color, and the only reference point is a lake 500 miles from where I'm looking, so I'd have to reference that against 15 other maps to finally get an idea of where is. I've tried asking at BLM field offices, but usually get such a complicated set of directions that I end up just giving up. I know of a few areas that are legal and good to shoot, but they're way out in the desert and something about driving 3.5 or 4 hours each way to shoot just doesn't interest me.

What I'm looking for is the closest open BLM land to Thousand Oaks. I know a few spots that are illegal, but not patrolled, but I'd like to stay on the right side of the law while shooting. I've heard of land out by Palmdale and Lancaster, but can't really deciffer where it is exactly.

Anybody have maybe a Google Earth map, or a clearly marked paper map they can recommend?

Have you tried calling your nearest BLM office? I did and they sent me a big packet of maps and information.

I know that it was mentioned that the San Bernardino Shooting map was recently updated and is due to come up in meeting in the next month or so to get it approved and put on the web and printed for sale.

It was mentioned that LA's map is way out of date and that you would need to contact/complain to the people in charge to see if it could be updated.

Do you want an AOW or C&R SBS/SBR in CA?
